Ted Cruz supporters dominate NC’s GOP delegate selection so far

Donald Trump won North Carolina’s Republican primary last month, but many of the state’s GOP convention delegates elected so far prefer the second-place candidate: Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

That could spell trouble for Trump if he doesn’t arrive at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July with the 1,237 delegates required to win on the first ballot.

For the first round of voting, North Carolina’s delegate count must proportionately match the state’s March 15 primary results: 29 votes for Trump, 27 for Cruz, nine for John Kasich, six for Marco Rubio and one for Ben Carson.

Any delegate who doesn’t support the assigned candidate faces a fine of up to $10,000, according to N.C. Republican Party rules. But if no candidate gets 1,237 votes on the first ballot, delegates then can support anyone they want – and for many North Carolina delegates, that’s Cruz.

“Cruz has got a better ground game,” said NCGOP first vice chair Michele Nix, who said the majority of delegates chosen so far support Cruz....

For someone to usurp the Constitution over eligibility, then usurping the voters of a particular state is as nothing.

Do any Trump supporters realize that by actually showing up at these caucuses to vote for Trump, that may actually get him delegates.

This should also be a warning to how Trump will run a general campaign. Not very well.

Cruz and Hillary are both uniparty so what’s the diference? If you Cruzers cheat Trump out of the nomination you Cruzers will become the most hated people in the USA. You Cruzers are playing with fire.

I was disappointed (again) that Trump didn’t make the minimal effort that would have earned him the Wyoming delegates and the larger effort that would have brought him loyal delegates in NC instead of unwilling delegates bound only on the first ballot. Does anyone think Trump could not have found 1,000 registered Republican supporters in Wyoming who would have attended the Wyoming Caucuses if he had tried? Anyone? Does anyone think Trump could not have found many thousands of supporters to pack these NC meetings if he had tried? I don’t like caucus rules, but I blame Trump for not learning the rules and at least trying.

The good side is that this is a learning curve. Trump will be more ready for the general election against Hillary after the primaries and the convention. Or at least I hope he's learning. After WY and NC, I am starting to wonder.

You’ll believe what you need no matter what anyone says, of course. But Cruz campaign has selected their own delegates, and they did so in 2016.

I was asked to attend the GA convention for the sole purpose of voting for the Cruz delegates. I know why I was asked to be there and yes, it has everything to do with the ground game ... The same ground game that every candidate should have in place.

The campaign seeks out grass roots supporters .. they choose those who they’re as sure as they can be that they won’t change their support to another candidate.

This is how it’s done and has nothing to do with Jeb Bush.

Nazi played by the rules in Germany too and look what happened to the world and finally found to those who followed those rules.

The GOP kept their dirt better hidden than the Dems until now. The Dems are corrupt and don’t care who knows. The GOP has deceived us and that makes them liars as well. Must be some great benefits in losing the Presidency repeatedly, winning Congress and then doing the will of Obama.

Oh wait... Ted is USING the rules to sabotage the frontrunner. Therefore... he is using THE RULES for his own benefit.

Y'know... this refrain really boggles my mind, when I hear it from Trump fans. When Trump "plays the rules", his supporters cheer his shrewdness; when someone else does the same thing, Trump fans snarl and call it hypocrisy, treason, underhanded, etc., etc., etc. The inconsistency is enough to make my teeth ache

As another FReeper put it to Trump fans on this point: "Just call it 'The Art of the Deal', and maybe you'll feel better about it!"

And his supporters are perfectly fine with playing-by-the-rules. What genuine OUTSIDERS they are, standing for the everyday American.

I realize that this is one of the most popular memes with the pro-Trump crowd... but it really makes no sense. Trump is for Trump... period... and he's more than happy to let millions of Americans (and others) project their fond wishes and dream onto him (no matter how badly they fit).

Why is it that so many people start clapping and fawning when Trump SAYS that he's for the "everyman"? I can count on one hand the number of politicians who DON'T claim that!

If he decides to bankrupt a company because he feels it's the "shrewd and advantageous thing to do", then he does it (and to blazes with the people who're out of jobs as a result--at least Trump will be able to move on, eh?). If he wants to take property from "everyday Americans" in order to build new property expansions, he'll do it. Forget that he speaks in generalizations and platitudes which match those of Bernie Sanders (albeit with a different flavor), and has shown no clear understanding of HOW to accomplish these many political promises in the new venue (i.e. national executive branch); the fact the he's a "businessman who gets things done" (whatever that means) is apparently the "magic bullet" by which he'll magically get the ability to turn the streets gold and "make America great again" by sheer force of his scintillating and crass personality. I suppose lots of Trump fans will whoop it up like the next WWE event, if Trump were to insult some foreign power with his characteristic "rough and ready talk". It makes me wonder if some people really and truly can't distinguish reality from "reality" TV...

"Cruz and Hillary are both uniparty"

Cruz never donated to Hillary or the Clinton Crime syndicate. Trump embodies the uniparty as he was "Don-a-ting" to any politician who could grease skids.

I wonder how the average GOP primary voter feels about? Let me check Ted Cruz’s polls... oh dear....

"Therefore... he is using THE RULES for his own benefit."

It seems that's what Mr. Trump did with eminent domain and the bankruptcy laws.

The bottom line is that Trump will spend money to buy off Democrat politicians to further his business interests, but he will not spend money to build up the grass roots in these "little" states that might further his political interests.

if Cruz or somebody else becomes the nominee with millions of less votes(and dozens of less states where people actually voted) than Trump then you are only rewarding the Republican establishment power brokers by voting for him in November.. not going to play that game.. ever..

How do you explain Cruz’s scooping up delegates when the GOPe hated him worse than Trump? Most of the planning for this dates back to 2015 or even 2014.

The GOP has activated their ground game in every state to make sure Cruz has enough to stop Trump and that Trump can't fix it by 2nd ballot. Cruz had planning but nothing to sweep the states as he is doing.

It breaks my heart that people who started out wanting to beat the establishment more than anything now accept Cruz is working with the establishment and support him anyway.

Cruz is uniparty ? Your cognitive dissonance has cognitive dissonance.

None is so blind as those that refuse to see. Cruz is backed by Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, Lindsey Gram, Paul Ryan, Carly Fiorina, Nicky Haley, Mitch McConnell, Golden Sachs, The Club for Growth and the entire anti-American globalist GOPe establishment.

Cruz is a uniparty stooge being used to stop the only American patriot in the race Donald Trump.

Again, Cruz is not uniparty, and the claim is ludicrous on its face. The establishment has no interest in seeing him either nominated or elected, period.

While they do wish to stop Trump, they similarly wish to stop Cruz. Their goal is to toss Trump (along with Cruz) at the convention and nominate a leftist ringer/stooge (as with 2008 and 2012), and that would either be Kay Sick (AKA Pig Vomit) or Zero’s Puppet Speaker Ryan (or someone along those lines).

But make no mistake, there is no effort by the party establishment to willfully nominate Ted Cruz.

BTW, since you appear to be part of the Texas DewCrist gang claiming how Cruz is a tool of the left (*snort*), I’ll ask the question your friends miraculously can’t seem to answer. Assuming Cruz is still in the Senate going into 2018, who is this magical Tea Party Conservative who is going to challenge Ted from the right and defeat him in the primary ? I await your reply with baited breath.

Dan Patrick, I voted for Cruz three times in 2012.
