Ted Cruz gains ground in shadow battle for delegates
The Boston Globe ^ | April 5, 2016 | Tracy Jan and Matt Viser

They’ve duked it out in debates, over Twitter, and in hard-fought primary elections attracting millions of voters. But now as the remaining three Republicans running for president prepare for a possible contested nominating convention in July, a shadow campaign has begun for the hearts and minds of delegates who will fill the Cleveland convention hall.

The stakes in this stealthy combat could wind up to be as important in determining the party’s nominee, or more so, than the actual primary elections.

Here’s how it works: If front-runner Donald Trump fails to secure the 1,237 delegates necessary to clinch the nomination before the July 18 convention, nearly all of those state delegates who were obligated to vote for Trump under their home-state primary rules will be released, after an initial ballot, to support whomever they want.

Senator Ted Cruz, in that scenario, is hoping to pounce.

Even as he has been campaigning to win the Wisconsin primary on Tuesday in an attempt to blunt Trump’s momentum, the Texas conservative and his supporters have been waging state-by-state battles to influence state conventions that choose the Cleveland delegates....

Typical GOPe behavior. The ends justify their means.

If Trump were doing this you’d all be posting “Brilliant!” memes and high-fiving each other. But he’s not to be bothered with the “rules” and details, is he?

Folks, wake up...if Cruz wasn’t getting HIS anti-establishment folks elected as delegates, ALL the delegates would be those selected by the GOPe. The “Cruz delegates” DEFEATED GOPe folks competing to be delegates.

TRUMPSTERS, join the fight to defeat GOPe politicians running to be delegates. QUIT WHINING and begin the HARD WORK of struggling to be delegates—don”the act the victim and allow the GOPe to defeat us.

If YOU really want the angry rhetoric to stop, I suggest you stop posting lines like this one. Don't presume you KNOW anything!

The RNC is planning an “open and transparent process” (if there is an open convention).

Gee, they sound like ... Obama.

Stealing, cheating and lying seems to be Cruz’s values.

Has he ever won legitmely or has this been his character all his life?

I understand the meaning and importance of civil discourse and try to practice it, so I’ve refrained from commenting to you, but I thought I’d let you know that after seeing hundreds of your angry comments the mental image I have when seeing your screen name is of the little girl in “The Exorcist” spitting pea soup.

What a horsesh** accusation.

No 2nd, decent and honorable people never champion rigging the game - it’s widely considered cheating and rightfully so.

This is common practice. Reince P. explained that to Trump in their meeting last week and told him that it was each candidate’s responsibility to campaign for the delegates of each State.

All the BS from FReepers about Cruz “stealing” delegates is evidence of not knowing the rules.

No, it's evidence that the GOPe is exactly like the Democrats, full of sneaky, low-life cheating to get their way.

The voters are supposed to control the process in our Republic, right? I am very disappointed with Ted Cruz. I used to admire him but now I can see that he's no better than Hillary.

Are you a fan of Ronald Reagan? Reagan did the exact same type of politicking Cruz is doing - and Trump should be doing - in advance of the 1976 Republican nominating convention. Ford arrived at the 1976 convention short of the delegates needed and the nomination was contested by Reagan. Ford eventually won 1187 to 1070. Ford even used the enticement of rides on Air Force One to woo delegates. Reagan was the insurgent and rode a wave of conservative support from "Reagan's Raiders" from the Texas delegation but in the end, Ford's strength as the incumbent and his use of the office won out. The party platform was changed as a result with a number of conservative planks added due to the strength of Reagan's coalition.

Did you see Villanova “steal” that game from NC last night. It’s outrageous!

Jay Wright must be a Goldman Sachs, GOP-e, RINO, lying cheating Bildeberger with 5 girlfriends.
