In his final swing through Wisconsin before the state's Tuesday presidential primary, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said states should be allowed to ban abortion even in cases of rape and incest.
Cruz took questions from Fox News host Megyn Kelly and audience members at a town hall event Monday at the Madison Masonic Center.
Early in the event, a woman who described herself as a moderate, pro-choice Republican told Cruz she's afraid if he becomes president he will outlaw abortion entirely.
Cruz said he wants to see people's hearts and minds changed on the issue. He argued laws should be changed at the state level, not through judicial decisions.
He also said he believes the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision is not settled law, calling it an example of judicial activism.
Kelly then noted that Cruz doesn't favor exceptions to allow abortion in cases of rape or incest.
"When it comes to rape, rape is a horrific crime against the humanity of a person, and needs to be punished and punished severely," Cruz said. "But at the same time, as horrible as that crime is, I don't believe it's the child's fault. And we weep at the crime, we want to do everything we can to prevent the crime on the front end, and to punish the criminal, but I don't believe it makes sense to blame the child."
Cruz took the question as an opportunity to criticize his Republican foe, real estate mogul Donald Trump, who said last week that if abortion were illegal, women ought to be punished for having one.
Trump later walked back his statement, saying he believes abortion should be illegal but that abortion providers and not the women who receive them should be punished
Cruz said Trump's comments were the words of a liberal trying to say what conservatives want to hear. He argued that women are victims of abortion, and said no conservative wants to see women punished.
Over the weekend, Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards campaigned for Democratic former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. She argued that women are already being punished by laws that make it increasingly difficult to obtain an abortion.
Richards, speaking at a private event on Saturday, said there is "not a daylight of difference between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz and John Kasich" on the issue.
Cruz was joined on Monday by two former presidential candidates now supporting him: Gov. Scott Walker and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina.
He plans to await Wisconsin's primary results at Serb Hall in Milwaukee, according to his campaign.
The full interview and town hall event is set to air Monday night during Kelly's 8 p.m. show.
It's a veritable stampede.
That said, Independents are the least of his worries, most Republican women won't agree with this position.
No exception for rape or incest.
I'd guess 90% of America's women and over 50% of the men disagree with that.
Ask any man: What if it was your wife or daughter? Ask any woman: What if it was YOU?
Cruz is correct, it is a states issue, just like the majority of what the feds currently do.
As to your second point, that is a problem, isn’t it?
Rather than bitching at Ted, you better try to solve the problem, shouldn’t you?
Personally I am alive because my 14 year old mother chose to have me adopted at birth over an abortion, so I have very strong opinions on abortion.
But having said that, rape and insect are different issues. For St Ted to say he is the judge of these women and their situations proves that he thinks he can speak for God as judge.
There is only ONE JUDGE, and it damn sure isn’t Ted Cruz. (Unless you believe in the whole Dominionist BS.)
Lots and lots of words to explain a very simple concept. Typical Cruz. Typical politician. Just....typical....
Incest... Damn autocorrect....
“But having said that, rape and insect are different issues.”
No they are not.
murder is murder, and a little child should not bear the brunt in any case whatsoever.
“Well, what are we trying to save then?”
Our Freedom.
“Why do we want to win if gay marriage, abortion, men using womens bathrooms and children getting to decide what sex they want to be is off the table?”
Who said it was “off the table”?
“Were just Fiscal Conservatives now? What does that mean? Lets hold America together another 20 years so we can make a buck. no.”
So let’s lose on principle, give it to Hillary/Bernie become a socialist 3rd world country with free on demand abortion and tax breaks for gay marriage.
“Were fiscally AND socially conservative.”
But the rest of the country isn’t the same.
“This is what we believe and Im sick of candidates lying about it.”
Well, we’re all sick of lying candidates, that’s probably never going to change.
“If the country has changed so much that what should be seen as terribly evil is now fine, then lets have it out in the open.”
“Otherwise whats the point?”
The point is take power away from the people who have destroyed this country.
We have the most vulnerable Democrat candidate in decades running, and this is all we can come up with. We are going to find a way to lose this election no matter what!
Of course that is the Biblical answer, and I'm pretty sure 10% of American women agree with you. You might even get a quarter of American men to agree with that position.
And, it is the righteous position.
But most people will vote against it, even in the GOP Primaries.
If you honestly believe that any woman raising a child who is the product of rape or incest won’t have terrible thoughts or emotions raising that child you’re a moron or choose to ignore human reality. Raising a child that you resent doesn’t go well.
Adoption is the obvious choice, but as a man you can’t quite imagine something growing in you I would guess. I know I can’t, but I tend to listen to women on this subject.
“That said, Independents are the least of his worries, most Republican women won’t agree with this position.”
Hillary will hammer him with this, and win.
Hard to believe Cruz was willing to give away Wisconsin that easily
You think pro-life doesn’t resonate with Wisconsinites?
If we have to lie about our position on abortion, then it’s off the table.
Playing with words bores me.
Dems don’t say “maybe abortion should might somehow be only allowed in the first blah blah months..”
They shoot straight and don’t hold back.
Because they believe more than 50 percent of the country thinks like them.
Let’s prove them wrong.
Without dodging and weaving what we believe.
I’ve had enough of that.
So should we become like our enemies so we can pretend we won, or are some moral issues worth fighting for, and if necessary, dying for?
PrevaricaTED will not be the GOP nominee. All prevaricaTED is accomplishing is getting Hillary elected by further dividing the people who oppose her. Sadly, Ted’s sycophancy are unable to see the inevitability of prevaricaTED remaining in a race he cannot and will not win. And if there is a brokered convention, the GOP will push poor prevaricaTED into the round bin and place someone they choose in the nomination.
“If you honestly believe that any woman raising a child who is the product of rape or incest wont have terrible thoughts or emotions raising that child youre a moron or choose to ignore human reality. Raising a child that you resent doesnt go well.”
I may be moronic, but you are clearly advocating murder if you choose to end a life rather than to deal with terrible thoughts or emotions.
Man up. Resenting life is unpleasant, but it sure as hell is preferable than ending one.
Cruz is consistently pro-Constitution. It is sacred text to him.
I’m just curious. Why do you think it’s wrong in other cases? just asking.
you know that they will resent the child? based on what?
how many women HATE HATE their exes, and might have conceived during a rape by their husband?
But still love their kids?
