Rick Santorum: Ted Cruz Is Losing Because He’s Not 'A Huckabee Or Santorum'

Here's why Santorum thinks Cruz is falling behind in the race.

In an interview with me on SiriusXM Progress at the Conservative Political Action Conference, former senator Rick Santorum said he believes that Sen. Ted Cruz isn't doing better in the GOP presidential primary and caucus races because Cruz "is not the kind of conservative that Mike Huckabee and I were."

Santorum says he believes Cruz isn't conservative enough when it comes to social issues. This, even though Cruz has loudly promoted anti-LGBT religious liberty laws, spoken at a virulently anti-gay conference last fall (which Rachel Maddow dubbed a "'kill the gays' call to arms") and has promised to overturn marriage equality through Supreme Court justice appointments.

"The early states have clearly favored Cruz," Santorum said. "I mean [the early states have] been in the Deep South. They've been in areas where Cruz should be racking up votes. And he's not. I think Cruz has show his weakness in not being able to take advantage of a heavily tilted playing field in his favor, of having a lot of Deep South and evangelically-heavy states early, and he hasn't done very well in them."

Both Huckabee, in 2008, and Santorum, in 2012, had won more states in the South on Super Tuesday than Cruz did this year, taking only his home of state Texas, as well as Oklahoma and Alaska.

"He's not following on in the path that either Mike Huckabee or I had followed on," Santorum said....

Does anyone have video or the statement where cruz renounces his Canadian citizenship? How about of cruz saying he did not know he was a Canadian until 2014? I want to put a little commercial together showing how cruz misled Texas to get elected as their Senator. Because there is no way Texans knowingly elect a Canadian to represent them in Washington. I think this is the line of attack Trump needs to use and I want to send him an example of how to use it.

Of course Santorum would be doing so much better against the celebrity candidate.

Thought he had the Huckabee evangelism down pretty good and problem was too slow to characterize the opponent as a disgruntle Democrat constituent.

There is really only one reason, and it is obvious.

Trump.

Trump has more new media than Cruz, and better skills at using it.

Cruz for Attorney General! Cruz for Supreme Court!

Maybe Cruz in 2020!

Cruz is still young, and a rising star.

HUH?

I think I read somewhere here today, that Sanitorium is in Kansas today campaigning for Cruz?

Maybe it was campaigning for The Rube?

Cruz is still in it BECAUSE he’s not a Huckabee or Santorum. Sheesh!

Didn't Cruz also speak at the pro-gay CPAC conference?

Dear Rick...check back after you’ve eaten a booger on live nationwide TV and you are STILL the only person besides the GOP frontrunner that has a shot at the brass ring.

Isn't Cruz doing way better than Huckabee or Santorum ever did?!?

I always wonder what is wrong with people's thought processes.

What are you people going to do when Trump is elected and turns into a democrat. Oh wait, we already know he is a democrat.

That is funny. You’d think Santorum would be a little more self-aware. Cruz is still in because he is not me. If he was me he’d be sitting home in Pennsylvania reading the want-ads.

You start with a bad premise and finish with a lie. Despite what you and other cruz supporters on this site seem to think, that is not considered a persuasive argument.
