Dick Morris: Why Rubio can’t win
The Hill ^ | February 23, 2016 | Dick Morris

Posted on 02/24/2016 12:30:01 AM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Chris Christie has crashed, John Kasich is ghettoized, Scott Walker self-destructed and nobody bought the idea of Jeb Bush, and now all the king's horses and all the king's men -- and Fox News -- are trying to shove Marco Rubio down the throats of the Republican electorate.

But they'll never make the sale.

The fundamental fault line that runs through the middle of the Republican and Democratic parties is that which separates the establishment from the true believers. And nothing is clearer than the fact that nobody will cross that line unless there is absolutely no other option.

The basic strategy of the hysterics about Donald Trump's ascendance is to force an amalgamation of the alternatives into a Great White Hope who can take on The Donald. It's thought that Trump can only win a plurality and not a majority. Based on that reasoning, those who oppose a Trump candidacy posit that all they have to do is to pick off the alternatives until there is only one remaining opponent to Trump. And they have decided that his name is Marco Rubio.

The defect in this thesis is that it ignores the fault line. Rand Paul voters didn't go to Rubio, they went to Ted Cruz. Ben Carson supporters would do likewise....

I can tell you why Trump is leading. The majority of people in this country don’t pay attention to politics. They don’t even know who Cruz or Rubio are. All they have is Donald Trump and name recognition and believe he’ll be the one that can turn the economy around and provide them with jobs.

My sister in South Carolina is a prime example. Very well-educated but doesn’t pay a lick of attention to politics. She voted for Trump and didn’t care what anyone else had to say.

Rubio is running to be Trump’s VP.

Trump will never pick Rubio as his running mate. He'd pick Oprah before he'd ever pick Rubio.

When all of us were begging the GOP to do something about Obama in 2012, who could have and should have been beaten, it did nothing but come up with Romney. No wonder the voters are mad. Romney left them with stolen elections in Ohio and a mess of other states. The party faithful have felt for a long time that they have been abandoned, with the GOP-controlled House and Senate EVEN NOW caving to everything the White House wants. WHY?? Rubio is being seen for what he is, a huge nobody who will do nothing this year to cross the White House. Ted Cruz, for all his bluster, same results. The GOP can only blame its pantywaist self at this point!! It neither recognizes nor cares that party faithful gave up giving personal contributions long ago, and only caters to its fat cat givers!!!!!

“Each senator, congressman or governor who lines up to support Rubio brings with him the kiss of death. They announce his fidelity to an agenda and style of accommodation that is precisely what the Republican rebels can’t stand. With each endorsement, he becomes less the Marco of the Tea Party and, instead, the Marco of the unpopular establishment politics of John Boehner and Mitch McConnell.”

I think that says it all doesn’t it? The more endorsements, Trey Gowdy, Paul Ryan etc. The more he looks like a Rube...and the so do the guys endorsing him.

.

Were you paying attention to his prediction in 2012...? But all of a sudden he now has credibility...

He's a non-Liberal, and if you can't agree with that, he's not our enemy.

He certainly hasn't been on the Liberal team for years and years.

He has interesting things to say.

Our side can't be picky about choosing allies.

We control nothing.

Liberals own Hollywood, TV, the music industry, education from Kindergarten through post-grad, all federal agencies, the news media.....shall I go on?

If Morris wants to attack Hillary and Obama and the Liberals, I'm fine with that.

As I said, he's not on their side and we can't be choosy in picking allies. I'll take him.

And no, I wasn't paying attention to his predictions in 2012.

I was deployed to Afghanistan for the last 2 elections.

Uh-oh. This is not good.Morris has the very best record of being wrong of all the prognosticators. If he says something will happen, it will not happen. If he says something is impossible it is inevitable.

I’m with you...he (Morris) gets on my nerves too.

“I can even understand your preemptive strike in order to keep Trump going and to keep Rubio at bay. Right now, I would be very disappointed if Cruz withdrew from the race because that would put Rubio one-on-one against Trump and there are data out there that suggests Rubio would prevail, although I am skeptical.”

Don’t sweat that, Rubio is CLEARLY the Establishment, and The Establishment candidates are not even coming close to 50% in these primaries. If Cruz drops out, Trump gets most of his votes, and if Carson drops out, Trump likely gets all of his votes.

Rubio is simply another McCain in the eyes of 65% of the Republican electorate, and we saw where that got us.

“...the fickleness with which conservatives abandon Cruz for a man I regard to be a transparent mountebank. This is not a model of behavior which will encourage future conservatives...”

I know exactly what you mean, but I think perhaps what is going on in American politics and culture will never happen again, so future conservatives need not be demoralized. If HRC (or Biden or whoever) wins this election, our country will be lost for good. Four or eight more years under the Dems will mean that conservatives will have to find a way to hide in this country, to build lives for their families that are as off-the-grid as possible. Within twenty years, even people who would barely be called upper middle class will not get social security and their 401ks, which are supposed to not be taxed if you wait until retirement age, will indeed be taxed — if they haven't been seized before that.

Another four of eight years under a Democrat president and our path towards becoming Venezuela will be set, and unchangeable. That is why, although I am supporting and will vote for Ted Cruz, I am preparing myself for the probability that Trump will be the Republican nominee, in which case, I'll vote for Trump. Any port in a storm.

Both are bad. Rove is toxic. Morris means well. He actually thinks he has insights.

(I quote this because I want more people to read it again.)

Well said!
You set a good example for the Cruz fans.

Hope the Cruz supporters consider your analysis/advice regarding a vote for Trump if he is the nominee, because Trump will be better than any establishment candidates, and certainly better than the RATS such as Hillary, Sanders, Biden.....

I am one of the Cruz supporters who is leaning toward Trump. I’ve followed and even been more than a monthly contributor, for quite a long time. I’ve admired Cruz’ strong stance on Conservative matters since I became aware of him in Texas politics.

I have been aggravated by his incessant pleas for more and more money. Five emails, plus at least one phone call daily have pushed me away. I have agonized over his birth status; as I learned in school, many years ago, that citizen “parents” were required in order to be qualified for the presidency. Add in some questionable campaign behavior and I don’t know for whom I will vote.

I attended a Trump rally and re-heard his promises. I totally agree with bringing America back to greatness. I am listening for how he intends to accomplish this. Trump stands tall and I believe he sincerely wants to make good on his promises but I don’t hear many solutions.

I cannot support Rubio because of his lying about amnesty/immigration, plus, he is an anchor baby.....not qualified to run for president.

I have much soul searching to do. Your posts have been very beneficial to me. Thank you.
