Why Ted Cruz’s Facial Expression Makes Me Uneasy
Psychology Today ^ | Posted Jan 01, 2016 | Richard E. Cytowic M.D

He’s a brilliant orator with a sharp legal mind. But his expression unsettles me. I know my reaction is visceral and automatic, but as a neurologist it is my business to notice things out of the ordinary and probe them. The Senator’s atypical expressions leave me uneasy.

Skill in reading faces is so fundamental to our species that 54 facial muscles orchestrate its endless nuances, which others read like a book just as we read them. Only some of these many facial muscles are under voluntary control, which is one reason it is so hard to maintain a poker face or counterfeit a smile.

Downturned expressions usually signal disagreeableness or disgust. But I honestly don’t know because such an expression is rare in the context of public presentations that are meant to win people over. He may well be unaware that the message of his body language is incongruent with his words.

Prove it. I know at least three people who do not like Cruz. They cannot explain why. But it is an instinct.

I do know I don’t like him, he says all the right stuff, but I do not like him and do not trust him.

Simple as that!

Body language matters. It has for thousands of years.

It’s not the only thing, but it is bigger than many people know.

He missed the Blue Kachina because his turtleneck was at the cleaners.

And I’m sure Trump’s eye rolling and goofy facial expressions are just fine for you.

Yes it is, at least he isn’t hiding anything.

“Yes it is, at least he isn’t hiding anything.”

Very Presidential. . . . Not.

There is more to it than meets the eye. People here do not want to “face” heh, that fact, but it is real, and we are about to see that play out very soon!

Just watch, may take a few days.

It does, and it has. You are correct about that.

But it is unfortunate that it does, because people are deeper than their physical characteristics.

Is this what they teach in medical school these days? Is the author a real medical doctor with ethical medical standards, or is he a quack?

I was being sarcastic. Of course, they've mocked Trump for a long time.

Trump has a great sense of humor - I've actually heard him refer to himself as a conservative.

Cruz's sense of humor is quite stiff, but I don't select a candidate to support based on his ability to mug in front of a camera for laughs. Trump excels at it though, I'll give you that.

“Prove it.”

It’s unprovable and you know it. Grow up.

Though no more so than the anecdotal bullsh!t you just tossed up.

You didn’t prove it. So, you are a fraud who refuses to back up your claim.

I will wait because you will see that I am right soon enough.

I can be patient.

It has merit, as far as politics goes.
This has been known since the Greeks.
Some people are charismatic and find it easy to persuade, others don’t, and they try hard to compensate.

Cruz is not a natural, Bush and Bill Clinton are.
Cruz is using his mind to give him what his body hasn’t.

If smiling was important to me, Id vote for Jimmy Carter. :-)

That's a big toothed grin on Carter's face, not a smile.

Law enforcement sometimes have the same problem.”
