It's been obvious for months to anyone reading polls that break down by educational levels that Donald Trump's main support base isn't among conservatives, or moderates, or old folks, or new folks, but among non-college-educated Republicans. This helps explain why he gets away with defying GOP-elite orthodoxy on issues like immigration and trade and entitlements; his white working-class fans have bonded with Republicans over cultural more than economic issues, and don't particularly agree with the country-club wing of the party on a lot of policy issues.
But what about those college-educated Republicans who do favor free trade and "entitlement reform" and maybe guest-worker status for undocumented immigrants so as to make sure the gardens get tended and the meals cooked?
At FiveThirtyEight today, the Cook Political Report's outstanding analyst David Wasserman looks at the highly educated cadre of GOP voters that flocked to Mitt Romney's upscale banner in 2012, and speculates that a consolidation of such voters â like Mitt accomplished against the divided downscale support bases of Gingrich and Santorum â might carry the day this time as well. Who might benefit from this well-heeled coalition? Perhaps Marco Rubio, who, as Wasserman notes, has the highest college-to-non-college ratio of support in the field, at least in recent polls. Or perhaps the Establishment candidates battling Rubio for pretty much the same votes in New Hampshire, like Christie, Kasich and Bush....

No but Trump will. There is no way blue collar Whites and Reagan Democrats will back Cruz.
It’s hilarious to watch how shocked and appalled the country club wing of the GOP is at the idea that they, for once, might have to do the compromising.
Jump on those Cruz threads! Your compatriots should be here soon.
Trump is the guy to do that.
I think the GOPe might actually be falling back to Cruz as a ‘defeat Trump’ plan, since Rubio isn’t working. They can just stop funding Cruz mid-campaign.
Remember how both Romney and McCain took a break from campaigning a few weeks before their respective elections?
Pull the money plug and Cruz would be up a creek.
They are happy to have Billary in power for 8 years. More of the Unitparty.
This is a media lie.
There is no statistically significant difference between the candidates RE support of the college-educated.
It’s a simple lie, repeated over and over.
These are loathsome people who should be decimated, ignored, and replaced with a new base of support.
This "free trade" conservatism is unpatriotic, utterly un-American, because it puts their ideology before American interests.
Cruz has over $100 million in the bank as of right now.
I agree. Have seen this personally. My reflex liberal neighbor and I used to talk politics every week. We have nothing to wrestle about anymore because we’re both for Trump. I miss our talks. Plus, he despises Ted Cruz and would vote for Hillary (holding his nose) should Ted win the nomination.
M2T here he comes again....LOLOL....
Cruz is Trump's shield.
The establishment will have to destroy Cruz before they can try to destroy Trump.
When is the national primary?
Birds of a feather flock together rude one...
That perhaps is because Trump is a liberal. Your neighbor has not changed one bit, he hates the Constitutionalist. The change is on your side of the fence.
No but Trump will. There is no way blue collar Whites and Reagan Democrats will back Cruz.
The latest fox poll shows no significant numbers of crossover or minority voters for Trump over Cruz against Hillary.
And Cruz does much better with independents than Trump.
And with Turmp compromised, pull all media access. Except with Trump, the left controls who does and doesn't get media exposure and what kind they get.
Perhaps his neighbor is more conservative than he thinks. Can you name any liberals who are pro second amendment, building the wall, deporting Mexicans and deporting Mooselips?
Merry Christmas
They're worried.
They'll be frantic soon.
It’s not in the bank. A smaller fraction is pledged by donors and a larger fraction is in the hands of SuperPACs that Ted has no control over.
Ted’s hard money has grown but at a decreasing rate since he first declared his candidacy. That can change but it’s not for sure.
Of course he does, BIG backers there. And all their psychological profiling. And imitating Trump. Should be a walk in the park for them. Establishment wins again /s
Or maybe Trump supporters are brighter than they give us credit for. Maybe we aren’t sheep waiting to be sheared.
