John McCain was in a reflective, wisecracking mood Wednesday morning in Washington, but even in his most upbeat moments, he couldnât find much kind to say about Senate colleague Ted Cruz.
The GOPâs 2008 presidential nominee told reporters at a press breakfast that he wanted to âaccentuate the positiveâ in the 2016 race. He tiptoed around real estate tycoon Donald Trumpâs steely grip on the Republican presidential primary. When asked about the possibility of Trump becoming the partyâs nominee, he emphasized that heâs a loyal Republican.
McCain did point out that he had disagreements with Trump. But then, unbidden, he added, âI have disagreements with Senator Cruz. I donât believe we should shut down the government.â
Later on, the Arizona senator was asked which Republican candidates for president he thought were strongest on national security and which were the weakest. He said he preferred to focus on those he favored.
âObviously, I have the greatest respect and affection for [South Carolina Senator] Lindsey Graham. Heâs like a brother to me,â McCain began. âI do admire [New Jersey Governor] Christieâs gumption. I do admire [former Florida Governor] Jeb Bushâs proposals. I think [Ohio Governor] John Kasich, who I came to the House with me back in â82, has been a very successful governor in a swing state. [Florida Senator] Marco Rubio I clearly view as the next generation of leaders in the Republican Party, particularly on national security issues. Iâm sure Iâve left a couple people out. Thereâs a lot of very good candidates.â (continued)

Are you kidding me? Guys like that, when they are finally forced to retire their lives go down hill in a hurry. Nobody sucks up to them anymore.
If McCain supports Trump, that is even more reason for pause vis a vis THE DONALD. We should learn from McCain, but he is not the man I want for the nomination.
So how is McCain’s observation relevant to anything at all?
If McCain is against Ted Cruz then that only shows me that my support for Cruz is justified.
I think what McCain was doing was simply recognizing that Trump has absolutely ruled in this race, since three weeks after he joined. Every single poll.
He tried to endorse a bunch of other weenies, but Trump is in charge.
You know he would be all over Trump, bashing him with gusto, if he were the slightest bit vulnerable.
Didn’t Trump kick off his campaign by trashing John McCain’s service record?
I think he waved his arms around while he was doing it also...:^)
Heck Trump said yesterday, that McCain was not a real good candidate to run in 2008.
(though Palin brought him into the race for a while, anyway)
He went on to say that Romney was better, but never really worked at it aggressively.
It was a very good rally yesterday evening. Trump is quite skilled, he’ll be a very good president.
Sounds about right!
Well, Senator McCain, if you really don’t want Cruz around, you could help kick him upstairs.
Anytime the left wants to fluff up their narrative out comes Lindsey Graham or John ( I may turn democrat a year before I ran for president) McCain.
Linda and McShamie are besties. Would love to be able to read their private texts...
