GREENVILLE, South Carolina (CNN) -- Sen. Ted Cruz and Rick Santorum on Friday refused to condemn Donald Trump for not taking issue with a man who, during a campaign event, called President Barack Obama a Muslim and said Muslims are "a problem in this country."
The two candidates instead slammed reporters for asking about the controversy.
The Texas senator refused to say whether he believes Obama is a Muslim, insisting instead that "President Obama's faith is between him and God."
Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator, simply said "the President says he's a Christian" when asked the same question.
"Look, ladies and gentlemen I'm not playing this ... game that you want to play," a visibly aggravated Santorum said. "The President can defend himself. He doesn't need Rick Santorum to defend him. He's got you doing that very, very well. So cut it out."
Cruz accused the press of trying to goad candidates into a "foodfight" and refused to say how he would have handled the same question about Muslims in American and Obama's faith.
Instead, Cruz accused the media of trying to "stir up controversy," repeatedly refusing to address the merits of the questioner's comments about Obama and Muslims in America or whether Trump should have handled the interaction differently.
"You know, my focus is on my campaign," Cruz said. "I understand the press wants to get Republicans throwing rocks at each other. How about we talk about the challenges facing this country?"
Santorum insisted he wouldn't correct an event attendee's questions or statements, even if they were controversial or offensive, a response that echoed his comments following a similar exchange with a supporter in 2012.
"The questioner can say whatever he wants. It's a free country. He's allowed to say whatever he wants,"(continued)

And tendencies was a poor choice of words on my part; muslime sympathies and favoritism is probably better.
Doug, I don't trust the SOB anymore than you.
He's anti-American to his very core.
It is not the job of a presidential candidate to argue with every questioner in a town hall meeting.
Trump simply ignored the statement about Obama being a Muslim, just rolled his eyes, laughed it off, and addressed the more pertinent question about terrorist training camps, by saying we will look into the matter.
All Trump haters are getting desperate to make mountains out of mole hills.
May be the Hospital puposely constructed the birth certificate in a dozen layers?
Because in Hawaii they had lot of free time on their hands and to kill time, the staff spent 12 times more time to construct the certificate lol
I hope you immediately understand I am being sarcastic.
I agree. Donald Trump handled the situation just right. Why should he start to defend B. Obama? Makes no sense.
If he was a Muslim jihadi what would he do differently?
I hope someday, after Obama is out of office, that someone will have the courage to do an in-depth report or book on how fraudulent this BC is. There is enough information and details to fill a book about his fake BC and stolen SS # from Connecticut.
Only one person might do it...Donald J. Trump. Others are just professional politicians, busy milking the system as much as possible. That is how they accumulate millions.
“Look, ladies and gentlemen I’m not playing this ... game that you want to play,” a visibly aggravated Santorum said. “The President can defend himself. He doesn’t need Rick Santorum to defend him. He’s got you doing that very, very well. So cut it out.”

...”What has become of the questioner? Was he on GMA and the Today show today? Interviewed by anyone? Or has he disappeared?”...
He has disappeared because the media will not pursue him for an interview. If he is for real, he might blow their narrative. If not, they do not want that known. So it is a win, win for them not to find out who the man is and to ask him to come on their shows. This is all about trying to take Trump out of the game and it is getting serious. I just hope Trump is strong enough to withstand the vile threats which will surely come against him because he is resonating strongly with Americans.
That’s what I thought. Thank you. Yes I hope that Trump can withstand this.
In the sense that you mean it, the words “Jesus Christ Is Lord!” will never come with meaning from his lips.
As always, I believe he rejects the religion and gods of his fathers, and, who knows, he might just pay homage to a god of fortresses....or to himself.
Man, they really think they have something on normal people.
People tend to think Obama is loyal to Islam and not Christianity. They also think America has a problem with some muslims in this country and abroad. Imagine! How crazy extreme is this?
