Trump on Affirmative Action

by Roger Clegg August 17, 2015

Here’s what Donald Trump said in an interview on Sunday: “I’m fine with affirmative action. We’ve lived with it for a long time. And I lived with it for a long time. And I’ve had great relationships with lots of people.” What a silly answer. So Mr. Trump is “fine” with treating people differently — some better, some worse — on the basis of skin color, national origin, and sex. How come? Because “I’ve lived with it for a long time.” How does that make such discrimination more acceptable? Indeed, in this instance, the longer it has been around the less defensible it is, if the rationale is somehow to make up for past wrongs. And, of course, you can have “great relationships with lots of people” without discriminating against them. In fact, it might actually improve your relationships with lots of people. Sheesh.

Another non-story in hopes of hurting Trump.

How’s that working, btw?

So my objection isn't to the fact that Trump doesn't make repealing affirmative action laws a focus of his campaign. I am bothered by the fact that he says that he has no objection to affirmative action in principle. He could have said that he opposes affirmative action, then moved on to the next topic. Instead, he chose to say that he doesn't even oppose it. It's one thing to pick your fights and not make secondary issues a priority, it's another to be on the wrong side on those issues.

Notice he said he has "no objection to affirmative action in principle", which is not the same thing as being in favor of it, or being interested in expanding the scope. He's just saying he accepts the status quo at this time.

There's also various flavors of affirmative action. There's a whole spectrum from the original meaning of "take positive steps to ensure that all qualified minorities know of job openings" to "you WILL hire a minimum number of minorities, no matter how unqualified". He has side-stepped mentioning where on the spectrum he resides.

I really hope Trump chooses Cruz as his running mate...Cruz is a good man, really...

And when they team up and Cruz gets his feet under him from being ‘owned’ by the corruption of the money bags...he will learn from Trump...

If Trump doesn’t pick him as his running mate, then Cruz needs to be on the Supreme Court...or leader of the Senate...

I like Cruz, but we need ‘brash, harsh, backbone’ and that’s why Trump has my support 100%....

The original intent of affirmative action was to guarantee equal treatment to everyone. But like everything else the progressives touch, it has been turned into crap.

As I said and you conveniently ignored was the Oklahoma law was just a few years ago. And it has withstood the issues that other states have had overturned.

I am still a Cruz supporter, but on illegals he missed the boat and is being too PC. I escaped Mexifornia and illegals will destroy this country in just a short time.
