Trump on Affirmative Action

Trump on Affirmative Action

by Roger Clegg August 17, 2015

Here’s what Donald Trump said in an interview on Sunday: “I’m fine with affirmative action. We’ve lived with it for a long time. And I lived with it for a long time. And I’ve had great relationships with lots of people.” What a silly answer. So Mr. Trump is “fine” with treating people differently — some better, some worse — on the basis of skin color, national origin, and sex. How come? Because “I’ve lived with it for a long time.” How does that make such discrimination more acceptable? Indeed, in this instance, the longer it has been around the less defensible it is, if the rationale is somehow to make up for past wrongs. And, of course, you can have “great relationships with lots of people” without discriminating against them. In fact, it might actually improve your relationships with lots of people. Sheesh.

On My give a chit list of what needs fixing affirmative action is about #50. I just don’t care right now about anything except getting rid of the illegals, Obamacare and putting 94 million people back to work.

Keep licking those boots!!!

High 5, CofC, but I think you may have misspelled "butt." ;-) And since "butt" is, of course, singular, it would mean that "those" should be corrected to read "that."

Corrected sentence: Keep licking that butt!!! :-D

I don't think that you want to understand how the journey of a thousand miles starts.

I think you are being purposely dense.

You don't start a task by finishing the task.

You start the task by starting, and you complete the task by doing it. And then the task is done.

For example, do you see all sorts of injunctions stopping Obama's task? No, you don't. He's just doing it.

You can't possibly fundamentally change the United States, Barry O! The GOP will stop you! The courts will stop you!

Barry O to everyone - Bullsh!t.

That's how it's done, son, you just do it.

How do you continue to deal with these Trump toadies as if they had the ability to understand reason or logic? You have the patience of Job.

This phenomenon is very much akin to the messiah worship that we were perplexed about when Obama was the one who was receiving the adulation. It's just the right(ish) version of that, and the adherents to the movement won't entertain any other thought on the matter. He's the one he's/they've been waiting for. Everybody sing! "The Don-ald, The Don-ald, The Don-ald."

If you want to ding Trump you will have to find a better issue than affirmative action. When its five minutes til midnight on your whole country affirmative action is a non starter.

“Who cares if it’s a pressing issue this time around? He was asked the question, and he gave an answer that is directly contrary to Constitutional principles”

And amnesty is forgiving someone that broke a law.

Hardly a conservative position. But one 85% of the candidates have.

So I should vote for no one, because they are not perfect even if they might turn around our decline into socialism. According to your philosophy, that is.

With Operation Wetback, 25% were deported. The rest went on their own.

Just like after Oklahoma’s great illegal immigration bill a few years ago - the scurried into other states as fast as they could.

Cutting off handouts and enforcing employer laws works.

Why are you asking someone who thinks that the journey of a thousand miles begins with the last step about reason and logic?

Trump is not my first choice for president, but defending him a little on this matter, I’d say this is more of a case of him picking his battles. He seems to be clear that illegal immigration and the economy are much bigger issues than affirmative action so he’s going to leave it alone for now until the more important things are tackled.

I can find a lot of things to ding Trump about. Unlike you, Ann... I mean, Georgia Girl 2, I'm able to look at the big picture, not just a portion of it. It's 5 minutes till midnight in more ways than you can imagine. I just happened to light on this thread.

I like Cruz and Trump. The difference is Trump gets things done. Cruz never gets anything done. Cruz does not have any accomplishments let alone a list of them. Even his websites sites his accomplishments mostly as working for BUSH!

What republican senator has made an issue of aa lately? None? So now we.slam trump for not.taking on the issues that no so called conservative in dc will take on? Right...

With the exception of Jeff Sessions, no Republican Senator has been particularly vocal on opposing illegal immigration and amnesty either. We all know that the GOP Senate/Congress consists mostly of "moderates," sell-outs, and cowards. That doesn't excuse similar behavior in Trump or any other candidate.

Affirmative action is an important issue that has been intentionally marginalized, because like illegal immigration, the Left has largely successfully made criticism of aa beyond the pale. Therefore, most Republican politicians are quiet about it (or supportive) for much the same reason as their support for amnesty.

I would also argue that affirmative action (reverse discrimination laws aimed against whites) is probably one of the most destructive policies facing America with the exception of uncontrolled Third World immigration.

Well its good to know you don’t think affirmative action is going to have any effect one way or the other on Trumps’ campaign. Because it won’t just like anything he may have said 25 years ago. No one cares. Its about today’s problems and how to fix them.

Biggest beneficiaries of affirmative action ever:

Barack Obama

Ben Carson

Both should be on a town council or something. Ridiculous as president.

The GOP’s affirmative action mindset is what allows people who ought to be invisible fringe candidates to take center stage: Alan Keyes, Herman Cain, Ben Carson, etc. If they were white, their “candidacies” would be in the same category as Jack Fellure’s. It’s also what made the mediocre Mike Steel chairman of the RNC.

A conservative president needs to pick his fights. Affirmative Action is not one that we’re going to win.

Especially not NOW, in the primary campaign. How STUPID he would have to be.

Really, I think a lot of people are just plain pissed off because Trump isn't as STUPID as they think he SHOULD be.

Those examples are sadly passé. This was long before we had 16 years of Clinton and Obama appointees that have appointed left wing federal judges that will issue injunctions like confetti and jam the process. We now have a whole cottage industry of immigration lawyers. Unless the magnets are taken away nothing will occur. Ted Cruz’s plan is both practical and realistic and he is a true conservative on range of other issues (gay marriage, defunding Planned Parenthood, against affirmative action; abortion) as well. The same cannot be said of Trump. He is simply a blowhard and is carrying a boatload of gullible followers.

Trump’s a politician now.

The Trump brand name already had some cache in black culture, and Trump’s fight against illegal immigration is resonating with that part of the black community that is interested in jobs and work.

He’s decided not to risk that by going after affirmative action.
