Former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan, a conservative activist who ran unsuccessfully for governor, House and Senate, will be New Jersey chairman of Texas Sen. Ted Cruzs presidential campaign.
In a news release, Cruz called Lonegan a tireless advocate for taxpayers and said he knows New Jersey politics.
Lonegan, a former state director for Americans for Prosperity, said his duties include raising money and putting together a slate of delegates who would run in the 2016 primary pledged to Cruz. He praised Cruzs unsuccessful effort to force a repeal of the health insurance law commonly called Obamacare through a partial shutdown of the federal government in October 2013, even though Lonegan believes the shutdown hurt Lonegans campaign against Democrat Cory Booker in a special election for U.S. Senate that month.
Im probably the biggest fatality of that shutdown, Lonegan said. Im not going to say that if it was not for the shutdown, I would have beaten Booker, but at a minimum I would have done much better.
Nevertheless, he said it was imperative to have a president who fully understands the Constitution and will fight hard for it even when it may not be the most popular thing.
Lonegan dismissed the possible presidential candidacy of Governor Christie, who as the Republican Partys leader campaigned with Lonegan and helped him raise money in 2013.
Hes had a remarkable opportunity for the last six years to turn New Jerseys economy around and that has not happened, Lonegan said of Christie. In a U.S. presidential race where the economy is a major factor, a lot is going to depend on who has a track record of creating economic growth and opportunities for advancement, and Chris Christie has failed miserably.
That be Bogota NJ I presume
But he lost every time! Is it now, Lose with Cruz?
He lost in NJ.
It’s tough for a real conservative to win in the People’s Republic of New Jersey.
He lost as mayor? Then how was he the mayor? And how many races have Karl Rove and Jim Messina won as a candidate?
Sorry, Mayor is not a state-wide race which is his claimed expertise.
It’s New Jersey politics.
C’mon
See the second part of my post.
Yeah, this guys has tried for YEARS to gain traction without success. And he’s annoying too - with that voice and accent.
He has lost two bids for Governor, one bid for the US Senate, and one bid for the US House.
All that said, he loses because he is an actual conservative in NJ. Ted being conservative doesn’t have anyone better he could pick.
Long an is a good Tea Party conservative. Great choice.
Steve is a self made man who overcame handicaps to become a successful businessman.

Lonegan was born in Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, New Jersey. His grandparents emigrated from Italy and Ireland.[3] He graduated from Ridgefield Park High School where he set several high school track records. He was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at the age of 14, and is now legally blind.[4]
Lonegan has owned a custom home building business and a cabinet-making business. He served as the state national and finance vice president for the National Federation of Independent Business.[5][6] He graduated in 1980 from William Paterson College with a B.A. in Business Administration and in 1981 earned Master of Business Administration degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Have you ever lived in New Jersey? I’d be more worried if he’d actually won the race to be governor of New Jersey. For reference just look at Chris Christie. ‘Snuff said.
Yes, and he likely wont. But he is playing in the blue territory which tells me he is building a nationwide campaign...besides, picking off these states in the primaries is key.
No, no, no, Ted.
I don’t believe any republican can carry New Jersey but their convention votes could make a difference in the nomination and Mayor Lonegan has been able to win the Republican nomination in state wide races.
Cruz is reaching out to conservatives the GOPe has long considered expendable and I’m damn glad to see it. I know people who don’t bother to vote simply because they feel like the GOP has tossed them aside.
The GOPe strategy has been a miserable failure and they don’t seem to show any signs of giving it up.
