When famous people die these days, there is an irritating modern tendency towards hyperbole.
Everyone even remotely well known who passes away is instantly, breathlessly propelled via social media into the once rarefied stratosphere of great or finest. Insincere platitudes of alarming extravagance rain down on the heads of often thoroughly undeserving individuals.
Sometimes, though, it is deserved.
Beau Biden was quite simply the finest man any of us has ever known, said Vice President Joe Biden about his son, who has died from brain cancer aged 46.
I knew Beau well, interviewing him numerous times when I worked for CNN, and also interviewing his step-mother Jill, about him.
And I agree with his father. Its hard to imagine a finer man.
Beau carried with him a pride, passion, class and elegance that made you sit up and take notice, as the world discovered when he made that stirringly emotional, heartfelt address about his dad to the Democratic Convention in 2008.
Like Joe, he was very smart, engagingly charming, direct and amusing.
There was also a soulfulness to him, born from the horrific car accident in 1972 that blighted the Biden family.
Beau was not yet four years old at the time.
His mother Neilia and baby sister Naomi were both killed.
He and his younger brother Hunter miraculously survived.
Joe, who was not in the car, became a single parent to two little boys aged 30 just as he was about to become a Senator....

So, is he saying, he would NOT be a democrat?
Pffft. What would this torry, red-coated Lobster back know?
Piers Morgan doesn’t know his hole from an ass on the ground.Any opinions he expresses are invalid.
I thought we got rid of Piers. Who is quoting that dumbass.
Hasn’t Peeers been deported yet?
The John-John worshipers won’t likely agree.
Hey Piers? Go home. No one wants you here
Wasn’t he suspected of an influence-peddling deal when he got hired by one or more of the big mega-banks that have the headquarters of their credit card operations in Wilmington? Or was that one of Biden’s other sons?
Yea, that’s what some said about JFK Jr.
Certainly it was newsworthy, but never in my memory has any son or daughter of a high ranking politician been treated like an historical figure when they died...
My condolences to the Biden family, but Beau Biden was the Attorney General of Delaware, not a National figure...
As for Piles Morgan, who cares what that wanker thinks...?
He also could have been the first man to walk on Mars and leave the solar system traveling at lightspeed. He could have been anything any other dead guy could have been. Gimme a break!
Beau Biden was some guy, apparently a decent enough fellow, liked by those who knew him. That's enough, Piers.
Pierce Morgan might just have been the worst talk show host America ever had.
I feel bad for Joe Biden the way he lost everybody from his first marriage now. But praising the lost to absurdity is a tasteless and hollow way to honor them.
How did this pustule on the butt of journalism, even trash journalism, ever again get a job writing anything, anywhere? British journalism used to be the standard of the world. No longer...
All I know is, between the UK and USA, you can BOTH keep him! Keep that carbuncle the H out of Canada!
Progressives just can’t help walking on the backs of the dead.
I’m quite sad about this man dying, it seems very unfair all around. And Beau Biden may have been a fine fellow, but I’m sorry his father has never impressed me as smart.
