The GOP has to be at least somewhat cordial to him, because they know if it gets into a bare-bones fight between the two, Cruz would absolutely destroy the GOPe!
Plus, despite what the author and many other scribblers say, he has a better than average shot at the White House. They’re not using up all these man hours writing about someone with no chance at winning, believe me.
