In the last week or so we are beginning to see the outlines of the 2016 Presidential campaign. Ted Cruz is showing Jeb Bush that he can raise a lot of money by coming up with $31 million in a short period of time. According to the National Review, Long Island billionaire Robert Mercer will control one of the four Super PACs donating money to Cruz. Mercers hedge fund has been accused of underestimating what it owes the IRS by $6 billion. And Cruz has called for the abolish of the IRS. So Mr. Mercers support of Cruz is just a coincidence. I think not.
Rand Paul has shown us that he is going to attack what Sarah Palin has called the lame-stream media by being rude to reporters who ask him questions, especially female reporters. I would submit that while this may appeal to the right wing of the GOP, it is not going to win Rand Paul the support of the general public. While we all struggle with the important issues of our time, perhaps one of Pauls aides can sit him down and explain to him that it is rude to talk down to and shush female reporters. Once Paul gets the basics of human civility down, he will be ready to resume his campaign. Right now, I would say he is not ready for prime time.
Hillary Clinton has finally announced that she is running for President. I admire her courage. She knows we are going to hear 18 months of Benghazi, e-mails, Monica Lewinsky, impeachment, Vince Foster, etc. talk from the right wing. Well, to her credit she welcomes the fight. Hillary will talk about helping the middle class and the poor, while her opponents will claim to be doing this, all the while presenting policies that have the covert goal of improving the financial situation of the already super-rich. To do this the GOP will have to attack our social safety net, but, of course, they cant openly say that, because then people who depend on Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security will not vote for the GOP.
I agree with Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo that the debate in the Democratic Party will take place within the Clinton campaign. I hope Hillary gets a lot of advice from Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. Hillary can raise the money to offset the billionaires (the Koch Brothers and Sheldon Adelson, for example) who are going to throw all sorts of money at bizarre right wing candidates. She is tough enough to fight against this group, and she is savvy enough to listen to those on the left of the Democratic Party, who want our first female President to be an FDR type. To his credit, Barack Obama, who was much too cautious at the beginning of his presidency, has been more of an FDR type in the last few years. Hillary better win because, if the GOP gets control of the executive branch, the downward slide of the middle class and the poor is going to really accelerate. The GOP has the House, the Senate, and the Supreme Court. If it gets the Executive branch also all sorts of absurdities such as denial of global warming will be what passes for, in the late John Kenneth Galbraiths phrase, conventional wisdom.
Last week in the sports world, I was saddened to read of the passing of the great Daily News sports writer, Stan Hochman. It was also difficult to go the Phils game and watch Ryan Howard strike out four times. I believe that he hit only one foul ball in his four at bats. He is in serious, rapid decline. I also was reminded that 59 years ago the Philadelphia Warriors won the NBA title by defeating the Fort Wayne Pistons. I saw a picture of that team online, and I still can name everyone on that team (Paul Arizin, Tom Gola, etc.) including the coach, George Senesky and the owner, Eddie Gottlieb.
To end on a truly ludicrous note, last week the NRA, which has done so much to make sure it is legal for people to carry guns in our parks with playgrounds for children in Pennsylvania, has had guns banned from the floor of one of the venues at the NRA convention in Nashville . What is good for the goose is good for the gander, executive vice-president of the NRA, Wayne La Pierre. Of course, people shouldnt have guns on the floor of your convention. They also should not have guns in our children friendly parks in Whitemarsh, East Norriton, Lower Merion and other municipalities in our state.

Gosh I sure hope HilLIARy does not win!
We’d sure lose if she does!!
They can do ANYTHING to us, just don’t run HilLIARy!!!
God I can’t hardly read this.
Its like a 14 year old girl saying how much she loves her boyfriend. like 4ever and ever and evarrrr.
She’s so tough. She’s never had to account for anything in her political life...but she’s just soooo tough.
Hillary and Huma are REALLY “showing her strength” by staging phony stops with phony as “voters” on their Magical Mystery Tour to Iowa.
...dunce.
Well, he is an opinion columnist.
And if you don’t like his views, why, there is a single comment at the site.
There’s brown stuff dripping off his nose.
You’ll notice you never hear a single Hillary supporter mention any of her accomplishments, because ther are none!
Hannity trips up Hillary supporters everytime by asking them to name just one accomplishment. They never can and always end up sounding like idiots.
“God I cant hardly read this.”
Forcing yourself to do things that are this difficult helps build character. You should be grateful to Hillary for this opportunity.
Oh man. if I go on laughing any harder I’m going to need Depends.
It’s like a 14 year old girl writing to support her friends campaign for student council president:”Hillary is so great. She will be a good student council president. Everyone likes her.(except those meanies in Home Room.) So vote for Hillary Clinton’’.
The fact that this woman with 5 decades of crime, corruption, and cronyism is considered a viable POTUS candidate by our media is probably the most disgusting part of the whole thing.
She should be in the federal pen with Blago and Jesse Jr.
I couldn't have said it better.
Someone sure is euphoric from the odor of hillary’s grandma Mao pantsuits.
