Gone is the sunny, compassionate candidate of 2008. In the run-up to 2016, the former Arkansas governor is downright angry. He’s learned his lesson from his last campaign, ex-aides say.
In 2007, Mike Huckabee stood impassively on a Republican presidential debate stage while Mitt Romney tried to embarrass him. A program that Huckabee had instituted in Arkansas gave undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children the right to in-state tuition at Arkansas’s public universities.
Huckabee sounded, Romney said, like a Massachusetts liberal. “Are we going to give taxpayer-funded benefits to kids that are here illegally and put them ahead of kids that are here legally?” he asked.
Huckabee explained that the kids who benefitted were brought to the U.S. as children, that they had spent all their young lives in Arkansas’s public schools, and that, in many cases, they had excelled. He alluded to his own story—going to work at 14 as a local radio host, working his way through Ouachita Baptist University in two and half years.
“Let me finish, Mitt,” he said when the former Massachusetts governor tried to interject. “In all due respect, we are a better country than to punish children for what their parents did. We’re a better country than that.”
It was one of the more remarkable moments of the 2008 campaign. Here was a presidential contender not pandering to an anti-immigrant crowd but shaming his party— and, for that matter, his nation—to be better. Rare is the candidate who cuts against the grain of party orthodoxy; rarer still is one who uses the campaign to educate and persuade the public....

I agree with Huckabee on that. If you aren’t going to deport or imprison the parents for being here illegally, then don’t punish their kids.
I say we close the border and deport. But don’t “wink wink” let them stay here, and then oppress them.

Seriously, why doesn't this kind of crap make everyone's skin crawl? In this country we are DROWNING in our own "compassion".
America would be so much better if we gave just a little bit more of our money, time, country away. We're not giving enough yet, y'see.
At the same time we are on our last leg and NO ONE - no foreign nation, no politician in DC, no fat assed bureaucrat slopping at the government trough, gives a rats arse about us and our families.

I talk to a lot of regular people, not politicians. Almost every democrat loves government , trusts government , believes the news media and believes in global warming. and almost every Republican person i talked to is for smaller government, gun ownership, freedom of speech and doesn't believe in global warming( I am for all these too smaller gov, freedom, individual rights and so I'm a Republican too but registered as independent because I fear the IRS and Obama and the democrat party
They still have to meet the instate residency requirements just like anyone else.
Huckabee isn’t talking about letting illegals who currently live in California attend Arkansas schools on in-state tuition.
But if the illegals have lived in Arkansas for the required period (usually 4 years) then to make them pay higher tuition than other people who lived in state is oppression.
I respectfully disagree. No kids are being "punished" by the government. If anything, they are being punished by decisions made by their parents.

While Huckabee is now lying and saying he is dedicated to fighting illegal immigration, his record is clear.
Fact #1. As Governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee denounced an immigration bill (Arkansas Senate Bill 206) that “would have required proof of citizenship to register to vote and would have required state agencies to report suspected cases of people living in the country illegally.”

Fact #3. Governor Huckabee supported the McCain-Kennedy Senate Amnesty bill for illegal aliens. Huckabee claims to know God’s position on the Amnesty Bill, and that God supports it. Fact #4. Governor Huckabee refuses to sign the “No Amnesty Pledge”.
Which part of the word illegal is so hard for everyone to understand? There are colleges in Mexico, it’s not deepest, darkest Africa. It’s part of North America, just like Canada and the United States.
What is ironic is the people who don’t want illegal immigrants to suffer for the crimes of their parents would be more than willing to hit kids up for SS overpayments to their parents.
