A Johnson County Republican and second cousin of President Barack Obama is expected to move ahead Tuesday with planning for a primary challenge to U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, of Kansas.
Milton Wolf, who advocates for a divinely inspired return to limited government and individual liberty, invited supporters to a "major announcement" regarding the 2014 Senate campaign at an Overland Park hotel. The event will feature a performance by “American Idol” singer Krista Branch.
Wolf, a 42-year-old physician and a political novice, could highlight in Kansas the division playing out nationally among tea party conservatives and others in the Republican Party. Wolf indicated he wouldn’t follow in the footsteps of Roberts but would operate in the style of U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, who openly challenged established leaders of their own party.
"My fellow patriots," Wolf says on his website, "something big is happening and this is your call to arms. If you think that the career politicians in both parties have failed America, join us. If you've ever asked yourself what you can possibly do and you're ready to fight, then you belong here."
Wolf's campaign event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Ritz Charles, 9000 W. 137th Street in Overland Park.
Roberts, 77, has been actively campaigning for re-election through personal appearances. He has collected endorsements from Gov. Sam Brownback, former Sen. Bob Dole, statewide elected Kansas Republicans, 77 of 92 Republican representatives and 31 of 32 Republican senators.
The incumbent had $1.5 million in his campaign account in June.
Leroy Towns, executive campaign manager for Roberts, said the senator was a "tough, tested and trusted conservative who works hard for Kansas."
"Dr. Wolf's attacks on Senator Roberts are attacks on those Kansas Republicans as well," Towns said. "Only a Johnson County doctor who is seriously out of touch with grassroots Republicans across the great state of Kansas would choose to announce his candidacy for statewide office with a glitzy party at the Ritz."
Towns said Wolf had shown little willingness to talk about "real issues that affect the lives and pocketbooks of Kansas families and businesses."
"Because he is unknown to most Kansas Republicans, he also will need to answer important questions regarding his qualifications, his medical business, including patient privacy issues and the extent his business relies on government payments."
Wolf, in part due to his status as Obama's second cousin once removed, has appeared on television and radio programs hosted by conservatives and has written for the Washington Times.
In 2010, Wolf testified in the Kansas Statehouse against the federal health insurance reform designed to extend health care to millions of uninsured Americans that has become known as Obamacare. He also endorsed a proposed state constitutional amendment — never passed — designed to block its implementation in Kansas.
He said the Kansas amendment could serve as a "final firewall to protect the citizens of Kansas from being forced into a government-run health care system that would rob them of their freedoms."
According to Politico, Wolf delivered a speech in New Orleans last month titled "Shaking the Moss Off the GOP."
"It's time to take a page out of Sarah Palin's playbook," Wolf said. "It's time to take on the establishment. For the sake of our party and the republic, it's time to lock and load."
In a column, Wolf said: "Spending. Taxes. Regulations. Welfare. Debt. By every objective measure, the Republican establishment has failed. They have the gall to claim, with a straight face, that conservative primary challengers would harm the GOP and help the Democrats."

Doesn’t look Kenyan to me. Hmmm sometimes not all apples are the same even from the same tree. He doesn’t pull his chin up, no flies, I guess he is ok. Need to know more about him.

Never knew obozo until he was elected president - great reading here. Their mothers were cousins. Maybe he’s what the new breed of conservative is looking for.
For the record, I am supporting Senator Pat Roberts.
He is not perfect, but he is a good man who tries, frequently, to do the right thing.
He helped me with my complaints, as an insurance agent, with the CMS/Medicare rules for agents.
He supported Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate.
I know Kansas politics, and it is a waste of time and energy and money to primary challenge Roberts. Roberts was helping conservatives back when we had no friends at all in the Senate.
Roberts was patient with me, and with other Conservatives, when we took over the State Party back when Dole was our nominee. He was often irritated with his, but he tried teach us how to get things done.
Again, I support Roberts.
I too support Senator Roberts with everything I have. He personally helped one of my clients close on his home after the IRS would not do anything to expedite getting my client’s tax transcript he needed to have to be able to close his VA loan. The IRS was at fault because they misfiled his return. A veteran. You know, those whom our govt. should move heaven and earth to help since they serve our country so honorably. Sadly no. He and the lender tried for days on end hours and hours and hours turning into weeks. The seller was going to bail out of the deal and he and his wife were about to be heartbroken. Then the lender contacted Senator Roberts office.
The tax transcript was obtained the next day end of story. I will contact Senator Roberts office and volunteer if he needs my help. He is a hero in my book who is a wonderful man and a big supporter of veteran’s issues. This other fella has no chance. Zip zero nada
Roberts is conservative, supported Ted Cruz, and is a known. I’ll support him. Milton Wolf might want to get some experience with government at the state level before seeking a Senate seat. It would be better if he had a record that we could use to judge him before elevating him to the level of Senator.
If Roberts supports Cruz, then wouldn’t Dole be compelled to withdraw his endorsement?
