On the third-to-last day that Senator Frank Lautenberg ever voted in the Senate, he joined with 53 of his colleagues to support a compromise on new gun regulations. His vote wasn't enough. Now, Lautenberg's death makes the prospect of revisiting that issue and a number of other Democratic priorities substantially trickier.
Take the gun legislation. The compromise proposal, which would have expanded background checks to include gun show and online sales, was part of a package that was postponed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid after the failed vote. It's expected to come back before the Senate at some future point.
The proposal's sponsor, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, has reportedly been working to secure additional Republican support for the measure. In April, the measure came six votes short of overcoming the filibuster though one of those six votes was a procedural one by Reid. So Manchin needed five votes to ensure it would move out of the Senate....

Lautenberg has croaked. Say it again, and again.
Lautenberg has croaked. Savor those words.
Enjoy!
Affect of Lautenberg's death: High
The word the reporter is looking for is "Effect". And the only effect he appears to consider important is that the Senate may be less able to punish innocent citizens for crimes they didn't commit. That isn't much of a legacy.
Which makes it the best damn thing that could happen to this country right now.
Well... not the best - but we won't get that.
Lautenburg was functionally dead for about 5 years.
I wish his family comfort in this time, but New Jersey is a better place with him out of the picture.
MSM doesn’t mind at all when the GOP holds the Senate and left-wing crazy Senators prevent any business from being done whatsoever. No judicial appointments voted on, that sort of thing.
Better Headline: US Constitution Safer with the Lautenberg Dead
The Senate has be dysfunctional for several decades. FL, crook NJ, was just another fly in the ointment.
Sorry Mr. Bump. This is America. We don't "compromise" our rights here.
Lautenberg is one skunk I can’t muster any sympathy for. I hope his spawn and their spawn are crying their eyes out. I seriously doubt it but I hope for it.
Preach it, brother!
A nonfunctional Senate should be the goal for everyone.
Lautenberg was the one who tried to ban gun shows a few years back. Any ‘compromise’ he supported would deserve defeat.
I’ll enjoy it even more when I hear Harry Reid has croaked.
The New Jersey Governor may sell out and select another dem replacement. I sincerely hope not but if he does I hope that he does not go cheaply but rather soaks the feds dearly for the benefit of his state.
Saw that this morning and it put me in a great mood all day. Can’t be said often enough; the only good liberal is a dead liberal.
Ding! Dong! The witch is dead!
The only downside to LousyBurg assuming room temperature is Gov. Krispy Crisco appointing whomever is pleasing unto Obama to replace the deceased gungrabber.
Now we know why Christie & Obama had all those intimate Brokeback beachwalks from Sandy until now. Scary.
Lautenberg and Functionality are mutually exclusive! I understand that the Democrats kept a mirror at his desk to check his breathing and alert Dingy Harry Reid to prod Frankie when a vote was needed.
