Inside the cozy enclaves of GOP bonhomiehunkered at the tables of see-and-be-seen Washington restaurantsRepublican leaders are sourly predicting a party-busting independent presidential bid by a tea-party challenger, like Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., in 2016.
To them, the GOP apocalypse looms larger than most realize. Dueling State of the Union rebuttals and Karl Roves assault on right-wing candidates are mere symptoms of an existential crisis that is giving the sturdiest Republicans heartburn.
And yet, the heart of the matter extends beyond the GOP. My conversations this week with two Republican officials, along with a Democratic strategist's timely memo, reflect a growing school of thought in Washington that social change and a disillusioned electorate threaten the entire two-party system.
Seem like a lot to swallow? Allow me to describe my last few days at work.
Between bites of an $18.95 SteakBurger at the Palm, one of Washingtons premier expense-account restaurants, Republican consultant Scott Reed summed up the state of politics and his beloved GOP. The party, he told me, is irrelevant.
He cited the familiar litany of problems: demographic change, poor candidates, ideological rigidity, deplorable approval ratings, and a rift between social and economic conservatives.
Its leading to some type of crash and reassessment and change, said Reed, who ran Bob Doles 1996 presidential campaign and remains an influential lobbyist and operative. It cant continue on this path.(continued)

Not to mention the pro-defense Republicans and the “burn it all down then” Republicans.
I sure hope it does. I refuse to donate a single dollar to them anymore and have SPAMmed every email I get from them. Until the Tea Party takes over or gives us a pleasant alternative, I’m done with the Stupid-a$$ Party.
A little slow on the uptake there, Scott. Try and keep up.
We didn’t start the war.
Could? How about did already?
with obama and the left massivley overreaching there would be good potential to pick up lots of seats in 2014
EXCEPT
the republican party is deliberately destroying itself with conservative voters. The idiots.
Direct Tea Party donations ONLY!!
Don’t want it to happen?
It easy. Throw us some bones. We’re tired of being asked “Where else will you go?”
The answer is “Dunno. But I’d rather be right than President.”
Like your idea. Empty envelope . . . but ya' gotta' tell 'em why your not sending them any bucks!
Still trying to figure out what possible good a “lobbyist and operative” conributes to our society...
But, hopefully his expense reimbursement permits him to decently tip his Palms server getting paid minimum wage.
I think that is a great idea. Make sure that you tell them that your normal donation to the RNC went to the Tea Party this year.
Hey Karl... You cannot divide by Zero.
The ideological rigidity, IMHO, continually plays out by the establishment Republicans stacking the deck against conservative candidates and treating conservative, anti-Democrat/Leftist supporters like red-headed step-children, even after repeatedly having their annointed candidates getting their a$$e$ handed to them by the Rats in election after election. Screw them. They refuse to learn.
Oh, I tell ‘em alright!! I also write “Tea Party candidates ONLY!!” after my $0...:(
No. We did not start the political genocide of Conservatives. The Judenrat GOP leadership did, at the behest of the Ruling Class MarxoFascists in whom they marvel and wish to be liked by.
The GOP are nothing but the Judenrat for the regime. They hope the MarxoFascist crocodile will give them the crumbs from the table, because those idiots somehow think the crocodile is not even going to bother eating them in the end.
The GOP are at war with Conservatives as surely as the MarxoFascists are.
So I will war on them in return and put my weight behind TEA Party Conservatives only. Anyone else needs to be seen and treated the same way we see Democrats/Marxists/Liberals; as enemies of the Constitution.
What if Karl gave a party, and nobody came?
