Whoof! I paid $728.47 on my place this year, and since it's the first year I've had it in my name, instead of the estate, I couldn't take the homestead exemption. I was torqued that it was so high...

Aint Texas great. I have a timber/ag exemption on 20 acres down the street and pay $228 taxes. My house with the homestead exemption is less than 350. My daughter bought a forclosure up the block and will pay 835 but come May she’ll protest her taxes on the lower appraisal value, plus the homestead exemption.
Plus no city wage tax or state income tax. What is there not to love.
Texan by choice and loving it.

>>I paid $728.47 on my place this year<<

Damn, you must live in the ghetto, retired over 65 and or your place is 900sq ft.

We do not have a state income tax in Texas, but our property taxes are high.

My place is just at $200K and I pay pretty close to $4K a year. True, not as high as yankee land for sure, but $728.47

On the overall tax rankings, Texas is at 7.9% of income overall. Surely not as high as some of the blue states, but very comparable to many states in the nation.
