Barely three weeks before the Republican convention opens in Tampa, Florida, the party is deep in the throes of a barely disguised civil war. This is nothing new. The struggle for the soul of the GOP between conservative traditionalists and libertarian radicals has been going on now for more than 40 years, since Barry Goldwater briefly (and disastrously) wrested the presidential nomination from the corporatist Northeastern fat cats who ran the party for their own benefit. Ronald Reagans presidency was a breakthrough for the Goldwater stalwart, though now even Reaganites are finding it uncomfortable as they fend off the Tea Partys nihilistic insurgency.
The shock defeat in Texas of Rick Perry sidekick David Dewhurst at the hands of Tea Party candidate Ted Cruz was chilling for the Republican establishment. And there in the background, celebrating Cruzs Senate primary victory with hockey mom gusto, was Sarah Palin, queen by acclamation of the Tea Party. If even ultraconservative Perrys pick is now considered too traditional, too establishment, too safe, too left-wing for the Tea Party acolytes purging old-guard and dead-wood incumbents, which old-school Republicans can consider themselves safe? Cruzs surprise success has proved to the GOP establishment that its days are numbered. Denial is futile. The Tea Party mob is coming for them.
Despite a lackluster economy, 23 million unemployed, unpopular healthcare legislation and a president portrayed as an elitist Kenyan Muslim socialist, Romney is still only neck and neck with Obama....

Not this Reaganite. I love the Tea Party who puts America first unlike the GOP establishment which puts its own interests first.
Wapshott is actually the guy’s last name?
On the morning “news” on radio station WSB NewsTalk Radio 750 (Atlanta), at 5:41 in the a.m., on 7.30.12, a FoxNews “reporter made a statement about Romney’s VP pick and how it needed to be “better vetted” than McCain’s choice in 2008!!!!
I didn’t need a second cup of coffee, as this statement from FoxNews Radio made my blood pressure SHOOT through the ROOF!!!
You’re damned right the Tea Party is stronger than ever and the f**king RINOs (including the bastards at Fox News Radio) had better realize that we are tuned in to THEIR bias as intently as we are the f**king socialists’ banter.
Be forewarned, Fox—you’re losing YOUR base.
Astonishing and inexcusable. Romney is clueless. To him it's about politics and government - he's a "vision thing" guy. He's trying to beat Obama on Obama's pro-government, pro-socialist turf, because I suspect that's also what Romney is. Romney is losing because Obama is better at promoting the socialist agenda than he is.
With you. One wonders to whom “Reaganites” refers. Any of the Bushes? Cheney? Rove? Almost the entire GOP Senate? Or any of the other pastels currently on the Convention speaking list? Give me a break. The “Reaganites” (excepting Nancy and her children) are tea-partiers!
Neither Palin nor Paul seeks any insurrection; their goal is stability, and responsibility, whether you agree with their definitions or analysys, or not.
Romney’s campaign was insurrection. The MSM’s attack on Cain was terroristic assasination.
Lets not blame the fact that Obama and Romney are neck and neck totally on Romney
46% of people in this country do not pay taxes.—Obama voters.
Blacks—Obama voters.
Hispanics—Obama voters.
Food stamp recipients —Obama voters
Abortionists and their clientele—Obama voters.
Homosexuals—Obama voters.
Yellow Dog Democrats-—Obama voters.
When you look at these facts Romney is doing damned good to be neck and neck.
The author of this piece is a moron. The only nihilists are the Republican party establishment. They’ve made common-cause with the Democrats on out-of-control big government and spending. Tea Partiers are the only political group demonstrating they want to save this country, no one else.
You should have run, Milady.
Ron Paul and the GOP is a train wreck. Obama has that "What, me worry?" look on his face.
I have it on pretty good authority that her life and her family were threatened if she were to run this cycle.
After reading this terrible article I tried to figure out why the author had missed the obvious.
Then I read this: “ Nicholas Wapshott is the former New York bureau chief of The Times of London. “
Problem solved.
Fox and the GOP are treating conservatives the way democrats have been treating the blacks. Basically it’s “Where else are you going to go?”
< < Fox and the GOP are treating conservatives the way democrats have been treating the blacks. Basically its Where else are you going to go? > >
Not to Romney. Not to RINO senators or representatives. GOP can kma.
I was actually flirting with the possibility of voting for Romney — because, as we say, “0bama is soooo awful.” Then Romney opens his mouth and I try to see the difference...oh, yeah, with 0bama, we are boiled in 10 minutes; Romney’s socialism is a little slower. It might take almost an hour before we are cooked.
And this is called a choice? but Palin was a mistake? Sorry. Willard. Sorry, Karl. Fool the rest of the sheep. I’ll vote for Tea Party, for Reagan, for anything but someone who is too liberal to stand for the Constitution.
Mortrey, I switched from 750WSB several weeks ago and now wake up to 640WGST. As much as I miss Scott Slade, I no longer have to suffer Neal Boortz mocking Christians or pretending that Jamie Dupree knows what he’s talking about when Cox’s “DC expert” stares at the sun and calls it rain. I just got sick of it, and now enjoy a real Conservative morning show. You might try it...
I am with you.Sick and tired of boortz and dupree. On to 640 AM.
A Brit from Reuters...why do I care what a lefty thinks???? This guy is so out to lunch
Or, as I believe it was Reagan that said, “Give the folks a choice between a democrat and a Democrat and they will vote for the Democrat...”
As I recall, George Washington’s life and family were threatened... In fact all of us and our families are threatened. She should have said as much. Sorry to be so harsh but our family has a long tradition of “stepping up”. Two of us were at Ticonderoga and one is buried at Gettysburg. “I was threatened” don’t wash at our house. Do the right thing.
