Duvall’s one of my all-time favorites. Godfather, The Great Santini, Network, it goes on and on.

A couple of smaller Duvall films I’d recommend for FReepers (who haven’t seen them yet): Secondhand Lions (with Michael Caine) and The Apostle. The former is a great little family film that is just a hoot, and the latter is simply one of the best performances of Duvall’s career. The final 15 minutes or so is Oscarworthy all by itself.

Duval has been one of my favorites for many years. I felt a little dismayed with him while watching a sports fishing show with one of the usual hosts a decade or so ago. While fishing in Costa Rica, he made a comment about the military and how Costa Rica didn’t need one because “they took care of things themselves”. I didn’t know what to think of that but I’ll give him a break being around all those “morons in Hollywood” as James Caan calls them.

“Wrestling Ernest Hemingway”, he actually convinced me in that movie that he was Cuban.

Secondhand Lions (with Michael Caine)

I like this movie except for the fact that the kid never showed a bit of artistic talent in the beginning, and all of a sudden he's Berke Breathed? I would have been more satisfied if he were a world traveler or a novelist retelling the old men's adventures. That was about the only weak point for me. Otherwise, fun movie.

I’d like to add “Tender Mercies” to your list.

I agree but you left out Duvall’s epic portrayal of Augustus Macrae in Lonesome Dove. IMHO the best work he has ever done.

When I am browsing movie selections one of my key criteria is “does it have Robert Duvall in it?”

His projects have always ranged from outstanding to passably entertaining. I have never seen him in anything that was actually bad.

“Seven Days in Utopia” - some marginal acting by bit players, but Duvall is just excellent throughout.

"The Apostle"

Indeed. Nice turns from Billy Bob and Farrah Fawcett.

The Apostle was one of Duvall’s best, an outstanding performance. Other favorites of mine are Broken Trail and Open Range (great westerns) and Assassination Tango.

I loved, loved Secondhand lions! I think Duvall also played in a movie that was about a reclusive, bachelor professor who married late, and his then wife (an American writer who visited him where he taught) passed away. I can’t remember the title, I saw it on TV once and have been hoping to see it again. They had a favorite “spot” they liked to visit that overlooked a valley and the story ends with him visiting there again. It was a beautiful (and I believe, true) love story. Do you recall that? Am I correct in thinking Duvall was the main character?
