Former CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather says presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney has a 50 percent chance of beating President Barack Obama in November.
I have no idea what kind of president [former Massachusetts] Gov. Romney will make, but I do think . . . he has a good chance of becoming president, Rather told Politico. President Obama is even money at best at this particular time . . . His odds right now are 50/50 in my book.
Obama performs much better campaigning than as president, said Rather, who is promoting a new book, Rather Outspoken: My Life In the News. Obama must recapture his skills of engagement and persuasiveness that served him so well in 2008, if he wants to succeed again, Rather said....

One is a Liberal, the other is a radical Marxist.
Will anyone care? ;)
if Romney has a 50/50 shot of winning he has a 90% chance of blowing his 50% shot at it.
How can a GOP candidate have only a 50% chance of winning at the beginning of the campaign against arguably the worst President ever in the history of the US?
If Romney had a chance at all, he should be at 60% at least.
The Media and Obama haven’t even started in on him and he has no buffer at all.
He has a record very similiar to Obamas and it is full of lying, left-wing, Progressive Liberal behaviors/actions/policy positions and he is going to get torn into little shreds by the time they are through during the next several months.
By the time November comes around, he is going to be somewhere around 20 pts down because the GOP-E declared war on the Tea-Party, and cheated and manipulated the absolute worst, lying, left-wing, Progressive Liberal so-called Republican to be our nominee.
Romney: Because he’s never eaten dog meat.
Romney: At least he’s not a communist.
H/t Glenn Beck.
Romney will win. Just like he took out all his GOP Challengers any way he could, he will do the same to Obama. Romney will win.
I think everyone has become so jaded, and so pounded down, they think Romney is going to be another John McCain.
In effect, deliberately sabotaging his own campaign by only being really motivated to beat ... OTHER REPUBLICANS.
McCain really did not want to actually be president. He wanted to beat Republicans. It’s really all he ever does. Beat other Republicans. That’s what he relishes. Being a liberal “maverick” constantly damaging the GOP.
Romney for all his flaws, is profoundly competitive by nature.
He’s been after the presidency now for four full years.
So far, he’s been quite effective. There is simply no reason to believe, he’s not determined to - and capable of - defeating Obama.
And he’s never eaten dogmeat.
+1
Team Obama are the masters of that game, Team Romney are semi-pros, at best.
That’s a good post — it’s just what I had told my brother (who supported Santorum but likes Romney ok). I said he would pull another McCain, but my brother said similar things to what you did now.
I do not fear, God has everything under Control.
The reality that we’re going to have another McCain event?
That is reality.
He flipped the bird at Texas today. I’m sure that’s going to help.i
Dear Leader or Milt?
Mitt. He is skipping the Texas GOP convention.
Boy oh boy, that day can't come soon enough for me. I love visiting FreeRepublic a few times each day but lately it hasn't been much fun. Seems like a lot of folks here are more than willing to help our Dear Leader to another four years.
And now (sigh), since I have to make it known (sigh again), no I'm not a Romney guy. Rick was my choice, then Newt. But with Romney now slated to be our nominee, I'm in. Beating Barack trumps ALL this time around.
