Romney fundraiser brings in $400,000 for Menendez challenger (NJ)

A fundraiser Mitt Romney held Wednesday for New Jersey state Sen. Joe Kyrillos (R) brought in $400,000, a campaign aide said.

Romney traveled to Bernardsville, N.J., for the $5,000-per-plate dinner, where about 80 supporters showed up.

A close friend and ally of Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.), another Romney backer, Kyrillos is running to unseat Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), who is seeking his second term in the Senate.

Christie has been fundraising for Kyrillos, too, but Menendez has a more than 4-to-1 advantage over Kyrillos in cash on hand.

This investment of Romney’s time signals two things:

1.) Joe Kryillos is a viable candidate who can win.

2.) Chris Christie is a real contender for Romney’s running mate.

I’m sure how it speaks to #2 but definitely #1. Solid second-tier opportunity cause Menendez isn’t popular.

I agree Impy.

Realistically, will any GOP POTUS candidate win NJ in the next 10-20 years? Doubtful. Look at MA - RR was the last GOP to win the state - in 1984; nearly 30 years ago.

You can't fix stupid. Combine that with a majority of critters in states that vote for a living (layabouts, illegals and union members) and it's a pretty hopeless situation.

p.s. Understanding that some states are hopeless REALLY makes repealing the 17th logical, eh? That exchange still has me laughing.

The big guy has appeal far beyond helping in his home state but I don’t think he’ll be the pick for several reasons. CC would be like picking Pawlenty. Pawlenty would help in the midwest but his own state would probably still vote Obama. He could probably just eat Joe Biden in the VP debate though like Jabba the Hutt eating a space rat, that would be fun.

NJ was fairly close in 2004 but getting from 46% to 50% is a tall order for us there. HW Bush in 1988 is the last Republican to top 50% in any statewide race. CC himself won 48-45 with 6% going to some John Anderson type.

Great points!

Plus, I don't see two Northeasterners on the same ticket as a plus. One is bad enough.

“Jabba the Hutt eating a space rat” BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t think Christie is interested in being VP. He’s not a “wear beige and keep your mouth shut” kind of guy.

If and when he’s serious about making a national run, we’re going to see him becoming diligent about his appearance and his health. If Romney were considering him, Romney would have told him to “shape up”, IMO. Christie borders on being morbidly obese (if not there already) and with his access to the finest nutrition experts, personal trainers, and personal chefs, there is absolutely no excuse for his condition other than extreme self-indulgence.

It signals to the nation that he has a serious lack of self discipline and that’s a trait I don’t think we want to see in national leaders.

As a rule I’m not one to pick on people regarding their appearances, but Christie’s is self inflicted and completely reversible.

Yes, there wasn’t TV when Taft was President.
