Newt Gingrich says he's staying in the Republican presidential race all the way to the GOP convention in August, and that he's willing even eager to fight for the nomination on the convention floor. But does he have a chance?
Gingrich and his aides seem to think so, and they have a theory of how they can wrest the nomination from Mitt Romney.
It begins with pushing Rick Santorum to the sideline and uniting the party's conservative majority behind Gingrich. That's why Gingrich claimed a victory in having turned the campaign into a two-man race in Florida on Tuesday night instead of conceding defeat.
Next, Gingrich needs to win some additional caucuses and primaries the Minnesota caucus on Feb. 7, for example, and several of the seven primaries on Super Tuesday, March 6.
And even if all that broke Gingrich's way, he might still have to battle Romney for the nomination on the convention floor, an exotic scenario that Gingrich has embraced and says is part of his battle plan.
"It's very likely that at the convention there will be a non-Romney majority [of delegates], and maybe a very substantial one," Gingrich told reporters this week. "My job is to convert that into a Gingrich majority."
But even for a candidate who prides himself on thinking outside the box, the idea of a wide-open convention takes some imagination.
No major party has needed more than one ballot to choose a nominee since 1952, when the Democrats selected Adlai Stevenson. The 1976 Republican convention came close because neither President Gerald R. Ford nor challenger Ronald Reagan had a majority on opening night but Ford still managed to win on the first ballot.
Gingrich and his aides point to several reasons their plan might work....

Are you smoking crank again?
Santorum is acceptable to somewhere between 10 and 15% of the the GOP primary electorate.
That means he's acceptable to <5% of the general electorate.
That's some of the silliest sh!t I ever heard.
This is exactly what will happen. Rick will go down in history as playing a big part in the final destruction of our Republic.
That loser tries to act all principled and "wise" when he is nothing but another corrupt RINO masquerading as a Conservative. Rick like Mitt has nothing but a power-lust for high office. I pray he runs out of money, but likely Mitt and Soros will make sure that will not happen.
The evil GOP-e is making sure that nothing is left to chance.
What they don't realize that good Conservatives have the final weapon -- the withholding of their vote on election day. (see my tagline)
Newt—its over—the Rinos have won with Mitt. You can fight on but the fix is in —It will be Mittens and he will face off against Obama and—I believe —he will lose to him. Still, Its the way it will be unless something happens—and there ia a million to one chance that it will. Even if Mitt Dropped out—the RNC would make sure you would not get the nod—they would put McCain in Mittens place. Newt, drop out now, and seek a new direction in life—maybe as a film maker or writer.
Seek a Governor’s chair—or run some college. The Fix is in and the powers that be has selected Romney—a sad day really.
Maybe, just maybe, Mittens will win—and maybe he will be a good president after all—we can but hope.
Newt’s plan sounds plausible, but it won’t happen because Santorum is being paid to stay in. Newt won’t be able to get the votes as long as the conservative vote is split. mitt knows this and will certainly make sure that Rick stays in.
I’ve sent $75 that I DO NOT have, it’s that important!
hehe
