So, its no secret that Herman Cain has experienced a jaw-dropping dip in the polls and not because of the competition. Were all familiar with the inexplicable statements and his take on controversial positions several out of error, misinformation and/or misunderstanding of certain issues that a man running for president maybe ought to know. Political prognosticators are saying that his continuous flubs and gaffes are to blame for his falling from top spots in Republican polls more so than allegations that he sexually harassed and assaulted women in his past.
For a guy presumably wanting the title of Commander-in-Chief, the faux pas are serious and damaging enough for some to call into question his readiness for the job. Some of his excuses about being tired, for example, as the reason for delayed thoughts on President Obamas handling of Libya during a recent interview, just wont fly. After all, national security calls will very likely come in the middle of the night after very little sleep
But the flubs are just that flubs. They should not be representative of Herman Cains intelligence or lack of it. Whether caused by fatigue, failing to brush up on issues hes not firm on or reluctant to give interviews, nothing Cain says should define his past and his brilliance as a highly educated scientist and business man.
Seriously. How many Americans have a bachelor degree in mathematics or a masters degree in computer science? How many can use their knowledge of applied physics to study and analyze the motion of missiles or projectiles of all types and the conditions that influence motions of weapons on behalf of the United States Navy? Thats not knowledge you can pick up in trade school easily.
Dumb and Cain should not be in the same two sentences.
Admittedly, he is guilty of having a limited world view. And, perhaps, he should fraternize enough with people of all faiths to know that American Jews, Sikhs, Muslims, Catholics and Evangelical Christians all want the same thing: to work, raise their families and be good citizens.
Had he been more exposed to diverse friends, he may not have declared that hed be uncomfortable having a Muslim in his hypothetical future Presidential cabinet.
Had he been exposed to more hard working immigrant Hispanic families that are just like his, he may not have been so quick to pander to the legions of Americans frustrated with the illegal immigration problem in the nation. He wouldnt have joked about plans to build an electric shock fence on the Mexico-US border.
Had he traveled more and been more widely read in history and foreign policy, he might have told Christian Broadcast Networks David Brody that he doesnt knowing much about other nations including who the president of a fictional Ubeki-beki-beki-beki-stan-stan is or might have known that China already has nuclear weapon capabilities.
All of these flubs and gaffes dont prove that Herman Cain is dumb as some are claiming. All it reveals is that he may not have a firm grasp on certain topics and doesnt have the media team or isnt listening to his team well enough to bone up on areas he is unfamiliar with.
It may be helpful to note that expert campaigner Mitt Romney doesnt do too many media interviews and will rarely speak impromptu or reply to a random reporters question yelled at him on the trail. Hes disciplined.
Granted, that is what makes many people hate the man: being so rehearsed, established, polished, controlled (a.k.a. boring) and robotic. It has kept Romney from getting caught in any gotcha moments, especially given he has a record and reputation of flip flopping. You cant flip flop if youre not talking. You cant contradict yourself any more once you limit your speaking roles to the confines of an organized debate whilst youve gone over your talking points and know them like you know the freckles on your face.
But what Romney lacks as a candidate whom many Republicans are willing to embrace is what makes Cain so appealing. He is charming and likeable. Cains humility and folksiness, a similar trait which has garnered Sarah Palin many fans, have helped elevate him to where he is now.
He is the anti-arrogant intellectual. He has the quintessential bootstrap story. Cain, who once cleaned toilets and flipped burgers at Burger King, is prototypical all-American: anyone can rise to the top with strong work ethic and dedication. You cannot grow up in a household where your dad worked three jobs as a janitor, driver and barber to feed the family and not appreciate the value of hard work.
Black pundits have pontificated that perhaps Cain is ashamed of being Black or of selling out to the man especially after he went on CNN and said Blacks are brainwashed against Republicans.
But, he knows his Blackness very well. The man never said he wasnt Black.
Cain once told a policy review team, Because I am a Black American, Ive had to perform better than my White counterparts. This is a personal standard that Ive set for myself: Ive got to perform a little better in order to get the same opportunity. I cant just be as good; Ive got to be better. It should not be this way, but it is.
A man who still mentors young Black youth isnt one people can say hates his people. Several of his critics havent volunteered at all for anyone, nor done much for their own people. Yet, they cast plenty of stones.
A man who once sat on a Congressional Economic Growth and Tax Reform Commission and promised that his industry would give welfare recipients jobs, training and a chance to gain economic success isnt one who doesnt want other Blacks to succeed and do well.
There are different types of smart: intelligent smart, street smarts, book smarts, job-readiness smart, quick-on-feet-thinking smart. Cain is a few of these above, but certainly he is anything but dumb.
Those saying otherwise obviously arent smart enough to read up on the man and his accomplishments.

More back-handed praise I cannot imagine . . . and how much of the “facts” cited are exaggerations.
Reminds me of the title, “Killing Me Softly With Your Song”.
The “sex” scandals are extremely suspect a la Clarence Thomas. - Just wait; who ever the Republican establishment succeeds in getting nominated will be DESTROYED by the Obama juggernaut. Think not? Seen it too many times; and the gullible citizens fall for it every time. Every time. 4 more years of Obama looks unlikely now; but then so did 4 more years of the Clintons back in their day.
I would consider that going from top to bottom!
From experience... Engineers/scientist who know they can’t cut it go in management - or by extension into another field.
When you can put 'been there, done that' next to rocket scientist and bring home the bacon, that isn't a step down, imho.
More experience... I wouldn’t be so easily impressed with the degrees...
Or perhaps his people skills were just simply a strong point with him.
People, who tend to make great engineers tend to not do well in management because dealing with people is a different skill set than dealing with mechanics or formulas.
A lot of idiotic comments mixed in with some backhanded complements.
Cain was smart ~ he got out soon enough to begin a great second career.
Cain was in the navy!...not an engineer and not qualified to work at NASA!
I wouldn’t go that far either... More experience... I know a lot of really good managers who started out as engineers. I also now some that are worthless. It’s a case by case basis kind of thing...
Herman’s degrees and in math and computer science. I’ve worked with many in those fields and engineering. Many I wouldn’t trust to change the tire on my car, let alone be the President.
When I see big hay being made out of degrees etc., I view it with a bit of skepticism.
Remember - Jimmy Carter was a nuclear engineer.
Both in the article and on the thread.
On the other hand Cain was a math major. How dare you speak down to him.
Damn with faint praise, assent with civil leer,
And without sneering, teach the rest to sneer;
Willing to wound, and yet afraid to strike,
Just hint a fault, and hesitate dislike.

What Gaffs has Cain done? Every one hes been correct on despite the media claiming it was a Gaff. A pause to collect thoughts when tired is not a gaff either.
I had an aquaintance who had a Master's degree in math and "didn't pass" a test to work for AT&T.
Some people with GED's did pass.
Go figure!
Odd statement.
What don't you tell us what Cain's position was with the Dept. of Navy? Sounds like he was an engineer to me.
And your comment about Cain not being qualified to work for NASA is just strange.
It isn't like he started a company...he was a manager of what others built.
There are thousands of people who have done more than Cain...and they aren't runing for POTUS.
He isn't prepared by any stretch of any reasonable imagination.
Why isn't the CEO of PIZZA HUT running for POTUS? It's 10 times bigger than Godfather's!
You didn't have to be a genius to pass it since your level of intellect wasn't what we were after ~ we wanted to know if it would be safe to let you on the workroom floor and not get chewed up by the big machinery they were planning to purchase.
The same test, for the most part, is still in use.
So, think about it ~ I wrote up a safety test that's seen the test of time. No doubt many applicants with doctorates failed that test. So did a whole bunch of IDIOTS who'd been turned into hamburger in the first 10 minutes.
