The Rick Perry campaign recently came out with a campaign ad highlighting the fact that Mitt Romney enacted a state run health care system in Massachusetts. I found the ad particularly powerful, because I feel that nationalized health care should be a litmus test for Republicans. No candidate that has supported a state run single payer health care system is, in my humble opinion, fit to the be the GOP nominee in 2012.
Then I found this in Rick Perrys Wikipedia entry:
In 1993, Perry, while serving as Texas agriculture commissioner, expressed support for the Clinton health care reform proposal, describing it as most commendable.
Rick Perry was a public supporter of HillaryCare.
I understand Rick Perry was a Democrat, and support of HillaryCare was a popular position for Democrats. Still, it raises the obvious question: if Rick Perry supported HillaryCare, how can he attack Romney over RomneyCare?
Isnt Rick Perry being hypocritical in his attacks on RomneyCare, when Perry himself was a proponent of HillaryCare? If so, shouldnt Rick Perry apologize to Mitt Romney for attacking Romney over something Perry also supported in the pasta governmnent run, single payer health care system?
I would settle for both of them apologizing to the GOP, and then dropping out.
Once Perry’s past support of HillaryCare becomes common knowledge, it will be interesting to see:
(1) How many Perry supporter’s heads explode
(2) How much farther Perry sinks in the polls (can you actually poll below zero?)
Brilliant idea !
No he doesn’t. It will not matter anyway. The GOP and the Main Stream Media will annoint Romney as the nominee. Just as they did McCain. The handwriting is on the wall and Obama will be president until the 2016 election.
He supported something 18 years ago. I guess we all have the same opinions and believe the same things we did nearly two decades ago. No one is allowed to change their mind. By the way, I do not support Perry but stuff like this is ridiculous and, no, he should not apologize.
Don't give up yet. I heard on the news this morning that, in a recent poll, Herman Cain beat Obama by 2%. Of course, that's within the margin of error, but it's still early in the game!
I agree, this one is past the statute of limitations. Romney, on the other hand, still supports Romneycare.
Or they could find a way to make an excuse for it.
Cindie
LMAO
The media is already starting turning the guns on Cain. They are treading lightly. If they sniff ANY blood in the water it will be Romney before February. Obama will whip Romney because many conservatives will stay home. C’est la vie. C’est la guerre.
“Rick Perry was a public supporter of HillaryCare.”
Not only that but he also proposed bi-national health care covering Mexicans on the other side of the border.
Rick Perry supported bi healthcare? ;)
The letter is public record.
Does Herman owe Mitt an apology?
July 18, 2011: Cain: Romneys religion is a barrier to GOP nod ..... (w/ video) Republican presidential primary candidate Herman Cain says front-runner Mitt Romney cannot win the partys White House nomination next year because of his religion. Romney would be a good choice, but I dont believe he can win, Mr. Cain told editors and reporters of The Washington Times.
Cain is kicking Romney’s backside in MANY polls - the momentum is behind Cain.
If you don’t Romney as your nominee, get out the vote for Cain.
If he’s not our nominee, we have no one to blame but ourselves. There are MORE of us than there are GOP establishment.
Rick Perry's Intriguing Idea for Bi-National Health Insurance Contrary to Sen. Santorums impression, the idea here was to explore the possibility of allowing private insurers to cover health services provided in either Texas or Mexico. It was an attempt at studying the deregulation of the provision of health insurance by private entities.
Read it. You'll learn something.
“Nice Try”
Way to, once again, take Cain’s words out of context:
I know the South, and you have to win the South. Mitt Romney did not win it when he ran against John McCain in the 2008 primaries, said Mr. Cain. The reason he will have a difficult time winning the South this time is because when he ran the first time, he did not do a good job of communicating his religion. It doesnt bother me, but I know it is an issue with a lot of Southerners.
Asked by TheDC about the 1993 letter, Perrys presidential campaign defended it, saying the full scope of Clintons healthcare plan was not yet known when Perry signed it.
You need to read the letter, top Perry political strategist Dave Carney told The Daily Caller. He praised her efforts in trying to tackle the issue and urged her not to overlook rural Americans. The letter was at the onset of her efforts before she proposed anything. No one could have imagined the horrible monstrosity she cooked up, in fact not to be outdone until ObamaCare years later. <>I>
As Agriculture Commissioner he was concerned that rural Americans would be overlooked and their options even more limited, Carney continued. Working with the administration regardless of party, working with members of the other party, as long as you dont violate your principles, is important to getting things done.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported in 2005 that Perry defended his 1993 praise of Hillary Clinton.
Dont get confused that I am for Hillary Clinton, he told the paper, calling now Senator Clinton absolutely anathema to the philosophical positions of the Republican Party.
“I think your efforts in trying to try to reform the nation's health care system are commendable.” As Ag Commissioner, he went on to request farmers and rural members not be forgotten. There are limited choices in these areas for health care.
This was 5 months before Hillary's task force submitted a plan. It is a tough sell to claim he supported a plan that didn't exist yet.
