Speculation is rampant as to whether New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will enter the 2012 Republican presidential primary. Almost all the media focus thus far has been on political calculations, such as Christies ability to raise money, put together a national campaign organization, and withstand the rigors of the race.
For the most part, however, pundits are ignoring the most important consideration of all: Is Christie actually ready to be President of the United States?
The Washington Examiners Byron York, to his credit, did the math and points out that on October 10, 2011, Christie will have been governor for 629, whereas when Barack Obama announced his presidential candidacy on February 10, 2007, he had served as a U.S. senator for 768 days. On the other hand, it is not the tenure of service in public office that should concern voters, but rather the quality of that service, regardless of its length. Christies New Jersey administration has been marked by balanced budgets and other impressive accomplishments in fiscal responsibility, such as comprehensive pension reform, in contrast with the thin record of accomplishment in the Senate on the part of then-candidate Barack Obama.
Notably, the governor also took a principled stand on his appointment of a Muslim-American judge despite criticism from Islamaphobes, earning a standing ovation from the staff of MSNBC show host Lawrence ODonnell, of all people.
Furthermore, Christie previously served as a U.S. Attorney for seven years and successfully tackled political corruption on the part of both Democrats and Republicans, having amassed, according to the New Jersey Star-Ledger, an amazing record of 130 convictions against zero acquittals for the public officials he indicted.
Christie himself has been refreshingly honest about his preparedness for the presidency, stating on multiple occasions that he feels like he may not be ready. This self-awareness indicates both a willingness and determination on Christies part to address his shortcomings. If the governors recent, excellent speech on the concept of American exceptionalism at the Reagan Library is any indication, he has already begun to vigorously study up on foreign policy.
Christies sentiment is also a marked contrast with other politicians say, Sarah Palin and another presidential contender, Herman Cain, who disingenuously claimed that running a pizza chain gave him insight into foreign policy and flat-out refused to discuss national security issues until after the election. In fact, Christies famous candor should itself be considered an important qualification for the presidency, all the more so in a time of national fiscal and economic crisis, when leaders and citizens alike have been reluctant to confront hard, unpopular truths. Real leaders dont read polls, they change polls, as the governor declared during the question and answer session of his Reagan Library speech.
Chris Christie has been right on a great many things, but wrong on one. His record of accomplishment and rare character make him both ready and well-suited to be president.
Thank you for posting that remark to me.
See, this is what I was getting at. For those of us who followed the trashing of Michele Bachmann (and Sarah, obviously) here at FR, we know that many conservatives have a problem with women candidates. If you did not follow these threads, you might very well think all is well in conservative-land. But it is not.
And when I say “trashing” I do not mean serious disagreements with her statements and policies. I mean the trashing of her appearance, her voice, her marriage, her lifestyle, etc. Some of it was so ugly, it drove some of the more kindhearted off the boards. I stayed.
Normy, I don’t anything about you or whether you are overweight or thin or what. But many, many Americans are fat to obese.
I live in New Jersey and clearly remember the election between Jon Corzine and Chris Christie. Corzine’s entire campaign was based on the fact that Chris Christie was fat. Endless bad taste commercials emphasizing his girth. It got so bad that reporters began asking Corzine about HIS baldness problem.
I had multiple conversations with people who were angry at the attacks on Christie’s physique. In the end, it backfired, Corzine lost the election and the fat man won.
So if you do not want Christie near the Oval Office, lay off the fat remarks. It may very well backfire on YOU.
It's not the fact of being fat, it's the fact of being obese and running a country. Will he lose weight as President? He looks like he's gotten fatter. That is a serious health issue.
This is pure insanity. If Christie is dumb enough to think he has a prayer at this stage and with his views, then he has more than appearance problems....Yes, any votes he took would come from Romney, but he won’t register after Iowa.
Since he’s MY governor and I’ve seen him at events, I can assure you that he is about the same weight as when he was elected. Seriously.
I, personally, do not want Christie to run for President. He lost me the day he refused to condemn the Ground Zero mosque. This is a state that lost 700 people on 9/11.
But keep up the fat remarks. It helped him to the Governorship and maybe it will help him become President.
Unless, of course, you support him for the presidency. In that case, full fat ahead!
I could agree with your post if you said “some conservatives” instead of “most conservatives”. There are question marks about Palin - just as there are questions about most candidates.
However, I must say that Palin has certainly been vetted - unlike Obama, and even Romney, to some extent.
How goofy! Where did I ever say that not supporting Obama is racist!
I didn’t vote for the man so I guess I’m the racist.
Yep, you got that right. I literally CRINGE at some of the comments made on Palin (and other candidate)threads. I find the comments crass and classless. But I have been a member of the forum for too long to leave. And I am GLAD you stayed!
After all, we just let the men THINK they run things!
No, the point is that “you’re a racist” is what the drooling Obamabots say if you don’t support him 100%.
Now I’m hearing “you’re a sexist” from Palin people because some of us have a different choice in the primary.
The parallels between Team Obama and Team Palin are starting to get scary. Both Teams think their candidate is “The One” with no possible fault. Both Teams ascribe qualities to their candidate that warp reality.
To be honest, for someone like myself who has always been fairly supportive of Palin, it is a BIG turnoff.
First goofy, now silly. No comparison between the two camps. You must be a Perry supporter.
I’m glad you stayed, too.
If Palin throws her hat into the ring, I’ll be cringing, too. It’s Saul Alinsky tactics - those of the schoolyard and the atmosphere of the Lord of the Flies.
You forgot “sexist.” I must be a sexist for not supporting Palin.
You know - your original premise?
Noooo....
It would only be sexist if your objections to her were based on her solely being a woman.
I am 6 feet, 345lbs and Gov. Chris Christie is a LOT bigger than I am, from all the photos I've seen. He must weigh at least 400lbs.
