Special delivery for President Obama: From Romney, with love?
The former Massachusetts governor and all-but-declared presidential candidate sent his leftover pizza to President Barack Obama?a>??s election headquarters after a fundraising event in Chicago on Thursday.
"Great deep dish at @ginoseast. Sending the extra slices to @barackobama and his Chicago HQ team," he tweeted, adding a photo of the deliveryman.
Jeff Himmel, president of Bravo Restaurants, Inc., which owns Ginos East, wouldn't take sides, adding Obama is no stranger to his home-town restaurant's famed pies.
"Im quite certain that the President has visited our institution on several occasions and is familiar with our pizza being that hes a hometown boy," he told the Daily News.
"It was nice of Mr. Romney," he said, slightly sarcastically.
Romney's snarky stunt provoked a firestorm on Twitter.
Gerald Nelson commented mockingly: "After spending $100M on last campaign All Mitt can afford is Pizza" while Rumana Siddiky expressed surprise, "Ballsy. Who knew?"
Romneys Republican competition, Tim Pawlenty, decided that the pizza dig wasnt enough and criticized his recent Guinness-drinking photo-op in Ireland.
"@barackobama sorry to interrupt the European pub crawl, but what was your Medicare plan?" Pawlenty tweeted. Romneys communications director, Gail Gitcho, insisted that the delivery was not a prank.
"No prank - just a nice gesture since we were just a few blocks away from their HQ yesterday and had extra pizza," she told Talking Points Memo.
After all that effort, though, Romney got the order wrong. Obama and his wife, Michelle, prefer thin crust --preferably from Italian Fiesta in Hyde Park.
In trying to remember who Bodine was, I read that his father was the boxer portrayed in Cinderella Man.
Gah! That’s right!!
"Chumley, it appears we're going to have some left over pizza. What shall we do with it?"
"I say Duke, why don't we have it delivered to the chaps over at Sigma Chi?"
"What a capital idea good fellow! Let me summon the driver..."
He was just spreading the wealth. I’m sure the ‘Rats are down with that.
I don’t see the joke here. What’s next, Mitt will call the White House and ask Michelle if her refrigerator is running? (Actually, when it sees her coming, it probably wishes it could)
Plus, it is reason 4,409,382 why I don’t want Mitt as our nominee. This smacks of willing to “play nice”. I don’t want anyone who will slap Obama on the back and try to create some light-hearted banter between the campaigns. I want someone to excoriate Obama on the campaign trail, in ads and in debates for the deplorable mess he’s made of our nation since getting elected. Anything less gives Obama some implied legitimacy.
Absolutely.....we need somebody with blood on their teeth; and Mitt doesn’t want to muss his.
opensecrets.org shows no donations for Jeff.
What is he in high school or what? Very silly and moronic thing to do.
Romney’s a suck up.
Gino’s East? Did he actually read the writing on those walls? (for those who’ve never been, they allow you to write on the walls, or at least they did many many moons ago). At least he could have sent them Giordano’s or Lou Malnati’s. Now, that’s Chicago pizza. It definitely is a weird message.
Lou’s is palatable but ORD pizza isn’t worth a damn. Godfather’s is a poor imitation of it. I grew up in NJ and lived in ORD and I approve this message.
That’s not funny; that’s evil!
