In Palin's Absence, Romney Plays Front-Runner at CPAC (Good for a chuckle)
RealClearPolitics ^ | February 12, 2011 | Erin McPike

The presidential field may be wide open, but one candidate is playing the role of the inevitable front-runner, as his performance at the Conservative Political Action Committee Conference this weekend shows.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney brought with him to the event a large entourage that stayed for several days, while most other potential candidates dropped in and out of the conference to make their speeches and headline a reception or two. Other serious contenders brought just a few key staffers, but many didn't even have their top political aide in tow.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee declined to attend this year's CPAC conference, and they are the two potential candidates who are leading Romney in polls of the GOP primary electorate. Romney, however, is hiring staff and planning his campaign, and if Huckabee and Palin both choose not to run, Romney would become the de facto front-runner whether he wants that double-edged sword of a position or not.

Romney was already the object of the rest of the GOP field's attacks when he ran for president in 2008; as the de facto front-runner in this campaign, he can only expect that to increase. But Romney's team has been hesitant to cast him as inevitable for that reason, even though their actions seem to suggest they're doing otherwise.

The biggest difference, for example, between Romney and the rest of the candidates was in his entrance and exit for his official CPAC address.

Aides to Romney spent a good portion of Thursday afternoon scouting the site of the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington to find routes that would allow the candidate to get to the stage the following morning without having to interact with the press and other conference attendees....

More sad than funny, but the hundred million or so he will waste from his sons’ inheritance will create jobs I guess.

But heck, if it turns out the only one running against Obama is ‘Flipper’, I WILL vote for ‘Flipper’ (better of the blowhards).

If Romney is on the ticket, I will vote for another ticket.

Obama is more honest than the incompetent, duplicitous Mitt Romney.

MITT ROMNEY - THE PROVEN BAD GOVERNOR

"As U.S. real output grew 13 percent between 2002 and 2006, Massachusetts trailed at 9 percent.
* Manufacturing employment fell 7 percent nationwide those years, but sank 14 percent under Romney, placing Massachusetts 48th among the states.
* Between fall 2003 and autumn 2006, U.S. job growth averaged 5.4 percent, nearly three times Massachusetts' anemic 1.9 percent pace.
* While 8 million Americans over age 16 found work between 2002 and 2006, the number of employed Massachusetts residents actually declined by 8,500 during those years.
"Massachusetts was the only state to have failed to post any gain in its pool of employed residents," professors Sum and McLaughlin concluded.
In an April 2003 meeting with the Massachusetts congressional delegation in Washington, Romney failed to endorse President Bush's $726 billion tax-cut proposal."

Romney praises Obama again
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney praised President Obama
at a GOP fundraising dinner Wednesday ..
"I also think it's important for us to nod to the president when he's right," Romney said....
Romney, who spoke at a dinner for the National Republican Senatorial Committee,
said he's pleased with the president's plans to "finish the job" in Iraq and Afghanistan
-- lines that drew applause from the partisan audience. He also applauded the president
for standing up to the auto industry.
"I hope he continues to be tough ....The former businessman even offered faint praise for
Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, saying that after a series of initial missteps,
"I think he's finally getting close to the right answer."

“If Romney is on the ticket, I will vote for another ticket.”

You are using statistics the way Democrats do. Romney wasn’t responsible for everything that happened in his left wing state.

Can’t people disagree about the way Bush cut taxes?

Well, if this is how the Gop votes, we will end up with O again.

Romney is/was TOTALLY Responsible for: Romney's ABDICATION TO THE DNC.

“The Massachusetts Republican Party died last Tuesday.
The cause of death: failed leadership.

The party is survived by a few leftover legislators
and a handful of county officials and grassroots activists
who have been ignored for years.
Services will be public and a mass exodus of taxpayers will follow.
In lieu of flowers, send messages to Republican voters
warning them about a certain presidential candidate named Romney.”
- Boston Herald, 11/12/2006

"In 2006, while Romney was chairman of the National Republican
Governors Association - a group dedicated to electing more
Republican governors - his own hand-picked Republican successor
as governor lost badly to the Democrat, despite the fact that Republicans
have held the governorship in Massachusetts since 1990. Romney largely
ignored the Massachusetts elections and spent most of the time
during the campaign out of state building his presidential campaign.
He came back and publicly campaigned for the Republican candidate
the day before the general election!
“Locally, this is a rebuke to Mitt Romney and checking out within six months
after being elected and having accomplished almost nothing,”

[Jim] Rappaport [former chairman of the state Republican Party]."
- Boston Globe, 11/8/2006

"Governor Mitt Romney, who touts his conservative credentials to out-of-state Republicans,
has passed over GOP lawyers for three-quarters of the 36 judicial vacancies he has faced
,
instead tapping registered Democrats or independents -- including two gay lawyers who
have supported expanded same-sex rights, a Globe review of the nominations has found.
Of the 36 people Romney named to be judges or clerk magistrates, 23 are either registered Democrats
or unenrolled voters who have made multiple contributions to Democratic politicians
or who voted in Democratic primaries, state and local records show.
In all, he has nominated nine registered Republicans, 13 unenrolled voters,
and 14 registered Democrats."
- Boston Globe 7/25/2005

Romney Rewards one of the State's Leading Anti-Marriage Attorneys by Making him a Judge
Romney told the U.S. Senate on June 22, 2004, that the "real threat to the States is not the
constitutional amendment process, in which the states participate,
but activist judges who disregard the law and redefine marriage . . ."
Romney sounds tough but yet he had no qualms advancing the legal career of one
of the leading anti-marriage attorneys.
He nominated Stephen Abany to a District Court.
Abany has been a key player in the Massachusetts Lesbian and Gay Bar Association which,
in its own words, is "dedicated to ensuring that the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court decision
on marriage equality is upheld, and that any anti-gay amendment or legislation is defeated."
- U.S. Senate testimony by Gov. Mitt Romney, 6/22/2004 P>

"Romney announces he won't fill judicial vacancies before term ends
Despite his rhetoric about judicial activism, Romney announced that
he won't fill all the remaining vacancies during his term - but instead
leave them for his liberal Democrat successor!

Governor Mitt Romney pledged yesterday not to make a flurry of lame-duck
judicial appointments in the final days of his administration . . . David Yas,
editor of Lawyers Weekly, said Romney is "bucking tradition" by resisting the urge to
fill all remaining judgeships. "It is a tradition for governors to use that power to appoint judges
aggressively in the waning moments of their administration," Yas said.
He added that Romney has been criticized for failing to make judicial appointments.
"The legal community has consistently criticized him for not filling open seats quickly enough
and being a little too painstaking in the process and being dismissive of the input of the
Judicial Nominating Commission," Yas said.

If he was President with a Republican Congress he wouldn’t be left wing.

Let’s hope we get a better candidate. But I still say he’s better than Obama and I will not support anyone else when it comes to the vote.

If we ALL voted for McCain we wouldn’t have O in office you know;)

Beowulf9: " If we ALL voted for McCain we wouldn’t have O in office you know;)"

Exactly.

In 2008, the McCain/Palin ticket was up ++4 to 10 pts. in some polls, days prior to the election.
So rather than helping the GOP, Romney once again
had his backstabbing TeamROMNEY
attack Gov. Palin to throw Election2008 to the DNC.

Late in October, The American Spectator's The Prowler revealed:
"Former Mitt Romney presidential campaign staffers…
have been involved in spreading anti-Palin spin to reporters, seeking to diminish her standing after the election.
'Sarah Palin is a lightweight, she won't be the first, not even the third, person people will think of when it comes to 2012,'
says one former Romney aide…
'The only serious candidate ready to challenge to lead the Republican Party is Mitt Romney.
"Some former Romney aides were behind the recent leaks to media, including CNN, that Governor Sarah Palin was a 'diva' and was going off message intentionally."

"Peeking Out From the McCain Wreckage: Mitt Romney"

"Someone's got to say it: IS MITT ROMNEY RESPONSIBLE FOR OBAMA'S VICTORY?"

"Vanity: Team Romney Sabotaged Palin and Continuing to Do So?"

"Romney Supporters Trashing Palin"

"Romney advisors sniping at Palin?"

As much as I hate it Romney may pull it off with the nom.
He has a well run org and cash. There will be a bunch of candidates and he may just squeeze by. Im sure he can beat zero but we need someone to take this guv down not build it up more.

The slimey huckster may have a say. He and his bunch will go after the conservatives as they did in the SC guvs race. Barbour may divide the southern vote. Lots can happen.

I would rot in the gutters of hell before I would vote for Romney.

At least Obama has convictions and principles...making his actions predictable if not detestable.

Romney will say and do anything for power and popularity...a true changeling that ALWAYS goes whichever way the wind is blowing (the easiest course).

A man devoid of foundation.

When I read Romney's speech, I thought he said all the right things; but talk is cheap. It's his past actions that really should do the talking.

I am reminded of the part of Lord of the Rings, when Gandalf suggests to King Theodin of the Rohan that Gondor might ride to his aid.The forces of darkness were closing in, and the future looked bleak. Do you remember that scene, when Theodin said: "Where was Gondor when the Riddermark Fell ?"

That's just how I feel about Romney.

Where was Romney when TARP was passed ?

Where was Romney when Obamacare was being shoved down our throats ?

Where was Romney when the gulf was spewing oil, and government stalled all solutions ?

Where was Romney when the Tea Partiers were being called racists, un-Amercian and murderers after Tucson ?

He was around, he could have stood up a defended us any time, only he didn't. Now he stands up and gives a nice speech, but where was Romeny when the Riddermark fell ?
