Rep. Sam Smith of the 66th District got the nod to be Speaker of the Pennsylvania House at a closed door meeting of the soon-to-be-in-control Republican caucus on Nov. 9 but the official vote comes Jan. 4 and it will be done in the open.
Bob Guzzardi of LibertyIndex.Com notes that if all Democrats and 11 Republicans vote against Smith, he will not get the job.
Smith was the man who submitted the infamous 2005 legislative pay-raise bill.
To his credit, though, he voted against the recently passed Gen Theft Pension Bailout Bill.

The state's Tea Party movement is pondering a phone-bank crusade aimed at newly elected representatives encouraging them to vote against Smith, and other old guard Republicans tapped for top posts.

I think Dan said he was good on 2A.
The PA Legislature can waste billions with the best of them, but let them pass a pay raise that costs a few million and watch out.
Seems people should also pay attention to the larger picture as well.
I know. I think it's like proverbial straw on the camel's back.

Sam was a great leader during the Castle Doctrine votes. He used a parliamentary maneuver called “moving the previous question” that stopped all debate.
He’s shown he’s not afraid to play politics with Dems to move his agenda. He has my vote of confidence.
And Guzzardi likes to think he speaks for the Tea Party. He doesn’t, he’s just one voice among many.
A legislator with not only an excellent voting record on all critical NRA issues, but who has also made a vigorous effort to promote and defend the Second Amendment.
We could do a lot worse.
Heck, Rohrer voted for both the pay raise AND the 2001 pension bill, but that didn’t stop conservatives from supporting him.
I'm asking because I sincerely do not know. And if it were true, where he gets off saying he represents limited government conservatives.
But now it's a big deal that Smith voted for it?

Lentz had convinced a lot of people he was more conservative than he was, while Tom Gannon, who was the incumbent and who is a true conservative and is some I happen to like quite a bit, voted for the pay raise (and never acted like he was sorry). He also upset a lot of conservatives for being strongly on the side of the trial lawyers in the med-mal battle.
I know a lot of conservatives who were against Tom. Unfair and unwise, maybe, but that's how it was.
If I recall, it wasn't the bill itself that raised the ire of most of us, but the manner in which Fast Eddie and his thieving crew implemented it before it was legally available. Yes - I include the RINOs along with the Dems in that charge.
I like what I know of Daryl Metcalfe, and am on his Email distro, as Lentz don't talk much to us hoi-poloi!

Wonder where Sestak is going to be installed by Obummer - somewhere in Gates crew I’d bet, if not his replacement. Operationally, I think the Navy is struggling now; with him anywhere in the chain it will only get worse.

Along with others, and not just in this instance.
In 2008 PA passed what would become ACT 129 of 2008 - nickname Pennsylvania Cap and Trade.
This bill mandates the utility companies decrease their output by 1% starting in May 2011, 3% in 2013 and finally reaching %5 a couple years later. It also includes smart meters in homes. It FORCES the consumer to conserve or pay more. If the company doesn’t reduce the output they will be fined 1 million dollars which of course will be passed on to the consumer. This also calls for sequestration of CO2.
This was passed in October of 2008 at the height of the Presidential election and before Climategate. But I am told there are still some legislators who believe in global warming. Only 7 Republicans voted against this.
This is a job killer and will affect oil drilling and coal in PA.
Sam Smith voted for this and when I spoke to him at State Committee in September 2010 he told me there was nothing wrong with the bill.
It takes away our liberty Sam and you don’t see anything wrong with that?!!!!
