Top Republicans in Washington and in the national GOP establishment say the 2010 campaign highlighted an urgent task that they will begin in earnest as soon as the elections are over: Stop Sarah Palin.
Interviews with advisers to the main 2012 presidential contenders and with other veteran Republican operatives make clear they see themselves on a common, if uncoordinated, mission of halting the momentum and credibility Palin gained with conservative activists by plunging so aggressively into this years midterm campaigns.
There is rising expectation among GOP elites that Palin will probably run for president in 2012 and could win the Republican nomination, a prospect many of them regard as a disaster in waiting.
Many of these establishment figures argue in not-for-attribution comments that Palins nomination would ensure President Barack Obamas reelection, as the deficiencies that marked her 2008 debut as a vice presidential nominee an intensely polarizing political style and often halting and superficial answers when pressed on policy have shown little sign of abating in the past two years.
"There is a determined, focused establishment effort
to find a candidate we can coalesce around who can beat Sarah Palin," said one prominent and longtime Washington Republican. "We believe she could get the nomination, but Barack Obama would crush her."(continued)

Hope the GOP is not this stupid - it should be a level playing field - I refuse to vote by holding my nose again - as someone on here once said - I will be a LOSER on election day because I will write my name in if they pick the wrong guy!
We’ve already seen this with Karl Rove, the Murkowki scandal, Steve Schmidt, Meghan McCain [chortle!] and many others.
Sorry - or Gal!!!!
What I'd like is the most conservative Republican who has a chance of beating BO in 2012, I am no Sarah bot nor a Sarah hater. Let use our heads on this one.
Who’s the wrong guy? Who’s the right guy?
Ram Romney down my throat,
My response: I will not vote.
They haven’t chosen our candidate yet in a bi-partisan effort with the dems.
Give McCain and Graham a bit more time, and they’ll have conferences with the dem minority, to decide who they want to put up.
Hmmmm . . . sounds like the GOP elite could benefit from a few million love letters.
That describes Zero.
Politico is a corrupt arm of the DNC. But with that said, I believe some of this.
The RINO establishment/entitlement wing despises her. They truly believe that you have to play nice with the thug Dems and their allies in the media (like Bush did for 8 years when he was trashed with no reply). And she obviously does not.
LLS
So in other words this very election has taught these idiots nothing?
If the Republican Party comes out the otherside of this election and in any way tries to demean Palin or the Tea Party they will find themselves on the unemployment line with the democrats next election. Are they so stupid they do not understand that the people are sick and tired of this crap?
Well the definitely wrong guys is Romney - I would not vote for him if he came to my house with a wheelbarrow of money and made me king for the day!
It doesn’t have to be Sarah - but if they marginalize her - I won’t vote for their candidate - level playing field for all if you want my vote - hey whats one vote!
The GOP elites are Idiots but we know that,Maybe it is time to shut off their money.
Of all the news organizations, Politico is the closest to Obama. Obama’s best hope is intra-GOP fighting.
That said, I’m not voting for Romney.
They are. Mitch, Lindsey and the gang in the "Good Old Boys Club" don't want anyone to upset their power trip.
She is not an establishment rino and that is why the will try and stop her.Nov 3 we start the process of cleaning out the rinos who gave us the bamster.Country club elitist beware.
