Hatch: 'Sarah Palin has helped us all'
The Hill ^ | September 29, 2010 | Elise Viebeck

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) — who has been noted as a potential Tea Party target for 2012 — credited former Alaska governor Sarah Palin (R) for her endorsement record Wednesday, saying that as a result the GOP is "coming through" in spite of its internal struggles.

"There's a lot of antagonism right now between both [Senate] Democrats and Republicans," he said in an interview on the Fox Business Network. "And sometimes between Democrats and Democrats, and occasionally we have a little fight in the Republican party as well."

"But Sarah Palin has helped us all. She's endorsed a lot of people and we're coming through," he continued, prompting host Don Imus to raise an eyebrow.

The victories of Palin-backed Senate candidates like Joe Miller (R-Alaska) and Christine O'Donnell (R-Del.) in GOP primaries have contributed to a growing feud in the Republican party between its establishment players and those, like Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), who support Tea Party outsiders.

Hatch himself maybe be vulnerable to a challenge from the right because of his vote for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) and his support for the construction of a controversial mosque near Ground Zero in Manhattan.

In GOP senate primaries, six of Palin's candidates have won and two have lost.

Of the 37 finished races in which she endorsed candidates, only 11 of her choices have lost.

"I just wish I could get her to endorse the Utah Jazz — I think we'd do a lot better in this upcoming NBA season," Hatch added.

"Spoke on Don Imus show this morning. My jokes were pretty funny, if I do say so myself," he tweeted later.

Lets hope she helps a Tea Party candidate unseat Orrin in the 2012 GOP primary.

He knows his name is in the target rich zone and is already schmoozing her hoping to keep her away.

Sorry, Orrin. It’s a little late to run up from behind and join the walk yelling “Me too!”

You started in the Senate decades ago as a strong conservative. But the DC got to you.

Goodbye. See you in the primaries back in your forgotten state of, uh, where was that again... oh yeah, UTAH.

Orrin Hatch was one of the most stalwart conservatives in the senate when he was first elected. There were even times that he and the late Jesse Helms would round up filibuster votes against some of the worst legislation proposed in the early Carter years.

Then he got too comfortable in Washington and too interested in making friends and being liked by scumbags like Ted Kennedy.

There's hope that Orrin might revert back to the original version of Orrin.

Whatever. I don’t see this guy on the list to knock Murkowski off her position. Maybe 3-4 Republicans in the Senate were willing to do so and he isn’t one. He needs to go down along with the rest.

I read an interesting column a few weeks back that Sarah Palin actually saved the GOP by remaining a loyal Republican. She has helped keep Tea Party members in the fold. Had she tried to start a third party (given her popularity and following) it would have destroyed the GOP.

Sarah is an incredible woman.

I am sure one of the “knuckle draggers” will be here any moment to remind that (in his/her twisted logic) Sarah is a traitor and a RINO for supporting John McCain.

Just as a point of interest, a Google search for "Palin" in the past 24 hours nets the following response:

"Results 1 – 10 of about 10,622 from Aug 30 to Sep 29 for palin."

Most of those articles tell us why Sarah is irrelevant and no one should listen to her, but I think Hatch may have a point. I just hope he's listening to himself . . . and to her.

Hatch, you talk a good game, but your actions speak otherwise.
You support Murlkowsiki’s writ-in bid.

You will be a goner in 2012.

Be careful. It is becoming more apparent the establishment system allows for the good cop, bad cop scenario to be in force at all times. These charletains use the system to get all of us at each others thoats while they sit in their high and mighty thrones moving us around like pawns on a chessboard.

When one of the clan gets to DC, they ride their laurels until they are established in a media model and then off the ranch they go while all the while screwing us sideways under the cover of the MSM.

A pox on them all and for any representative that does not get on the train of term limits and repealing “retirement” for public service, we keep the tea party revolving door in high gear. This is a 20 year deal we are going to have to remain steadfast in managing until the best job one can get in DC is a tour bus driver.

Yeah, and let’s hope she didn’t make a deal with the devil by signing on with the Republican National Committee who is now controlling her agenda.

Actually, as I've said many times before: Orrin Hatch is a generally reliable Conservative vote. His biggest problem is that he often gets caught trusting his Democrat friends to follow his example and do the right thing when it's their turn - always to be disappointed - such as with judge confirmations.

Hatch suggested Ginsberg to Clinton because she was older and frail and sick. Clinton wanted a younger, sprucer nominee. It was a good move on his part, considering the GOP’s weak position at the time. It may work to our advantage in the next election cycle.

Also remember, back when the Democrats made filibustering Bush judges the status quo, Hatch was the first one to publicly and privately push for the nuclear option. He had had enough, and wanted to pull the trigger.

That being said, Hatch lack a bit of a spine, and is a little too worried about comity. Still, he's a 90% Conservative at worst, which ain't all that bad.
