O'Donnell's win: Has it made Palin the 2012 nominee?
The Week ^ | September 17, 2010

Posted on 09/18/2010 12:42:07 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

The 2010 election season has barely begun, but the shocking upset by the Sarah Palin–like (and Palin-backed) Tea Party candidate Christine O'Donnell in Delaware has pundits looking ahead at 2012. And what a growing number see, with delight or dismay, is Palin emerging as the inevitable GOP presidential nominee. Given the Tea Party's evident muscle and its allegiance to Palin, says Paul Mirengoff in PowerLine, "the nomination is Sarah Palin's to lose." Is Palin 2012 a foregone conclusion?

Who could beat Palin now? "I haven't wanted to believe this," says David Frum at Frum Forum, but such declarations are "looking prophetic" after O'Donnell's win. The other GOP options for 2012 — Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, and the best nominee we'll never have: Mitch Daniels — are tainted by their belief in science and the realities of the political landscape. Republican voters seem determined to make Palin our next Barry Goldwater.

It's too soon to make the call: "Palin is not as unelectable as O'Donnell," says Jonathan Chait in The New Republic. But O'Donnell is "kind of a more Palin-y Palin," and her campaign can be seen as a "dry run for Palin '12." Watch what lessons the GOP establishment and Tea Party base draw from O'Donnell's loss. That, and "the state of the economy in 2012," hold the keys to Palin's political fortunes.

Watch for the hangover: Palin's "career rises or falls" on one big question, says Michael Wolff in Newser. As more and more 2010 voters giddily "depart the mainstream — does the euphoria and joie de guerre last through the night?" This year the political "mainstream" is "a handicapped place," and the fringe is an exciting realm of "political plasticity and fabulousness." But a lot can happen in two years.

O'Donnell is part of Palin's master plan: Palin's enviable track record of picking (and making) winners this year will help her regardless, says Shushannah Walshe in The Daily Beast. When (not if) she runs in 2012, those indebted soldiers in her "upstart army" will be a valuable asset. And "if Palin's endorsees are elected this fall and in office come 2012, it would be easier for her to govern" — as President Palin.

Wishful thinking among the DC elitists, as the results in 2012 will not be like 1964, but more in the order of 1980...

Unintended irony is so ironic.

I’ve been telling people here for a long time that Palin is not only a LOCK to run, but also to win the GOP nomination and the Presidential election in 2012. When the dust settles after November’s GOP tidal wave, the credit will go to the Tea Party, and the individual most responsible - Sarah Palin. Love her or hate her, she IS the face of the biggest political movement of a generation. She has encouraged many common sense conservative citizens to run for office. Sarah has never been one to just cheer from the sidelines. She gets her hands dirty and gets in the action. She will feel a sense of duty to those she helped and to her country, that it is indeed her turn. Book it.

And all of this because a media selected RINO put in a call to the little known Govenor of Alaska.

More unintended consequences by the left.

Irony.

winners this year will help her regardless,

Oh please! Sarah is the same person, with the same conservative values, whether Christine won or not. She doesn't need a Christine win to 'put her ahead' in anything. She endorsed what the DE voters wanted, also. A conservative - and that's equivalent to NO MORE RINO'S. That's why Paladino won and Lazio lost in the NY primary. And Joe Miller won in Alaska. And Rubio is in the lead.

She's one of us, she's endorsing what Americans want and not what the 'rats and rino's want.

I’m for Palin in 2012. One thing is clear though...If Christine wins in Delaware and Joe wins in Alaska we’re talking earthquake politically. And Palin’s power/clout will go through the roof. The funny thing is that she could almost do more from the outside than she could as president.

Palin 2012.

I hope she is for putting and end to Employer based taxing and insurance. We must put a stop to it. The government must be forced to collect all taxes directly from individuals.

Agree that it’s been clear since she resigned the governorship that Palin will indeed run. It’s not only upstart tea party candidates she’s endorsed - see McCain, Bransted (sp?) in Iowa, etc. She is set to have a season of exposure unmatched in recent political history. First, she will continue her series of speeches to values-minded groups (as she’s been doing for months). Then, as we are now in gen election season, she will be extremely visible campaigning for her endorsed candidates. And, she will soon have her Discovery “Alaska” series, combined with her gig on Fox News. Finally, she will be doing another nationwide book tour as her next tome is set to come out later in Nov. This fall/winter will definitely be the season of Palin. Will put her in an amazing position to pull the Prez run “trigger” sometime in the 1st quarter 2011.

Ditto...this will be like 1980. Obama is as bad or worse than Carter, Palin is our antidote. I just hope she chooses a young “Jack Kemp” instead of a “George Bush” for her VP.

“These people actually get paid to write?”

Sure they do, from editors and media owners that totally agree with their views.

I remember the comment from one woman, a Manhattan elite, upon George W. Bush winning the election over John Kerry. “But I don’t know ANYBODY who voted for Bush” she wailed, and then immediately followed up with the sentiment that the election MUST have been stolen!

These people need to get out to “flyover country” more. They might find the heart and soul of America. Which is why they never will.

Everybody is talking about what the O'Donnell phenomenon means for 20102. Oddly enough, nobody seems to be talking about how this week's events in NH will reverberate two years hence. New Hampshire is the biggest stumbling block on the road to Governor Palin’s nomination. It is hostile territory that is likely to put a damper on any flame she might generate in Iowa. But Senator Ayotte is going to owe her seat to Sarah Palin who vouched for her and made her narrow win over the more conservative Ovide Lamontaigne possible. Ayotte in turn can vouch for Palin with NH Republicans. Palin’s reciprocal sponsorship with Ayotte will make her competitive in the 2012 NH primary. If she is competitive there, the nomination is hers.
