Winners and losers: The August 24 primary edition (#1: Sarah Palin)
The Washington Post's The Fix ^ | August 25, 2010 | Chris Cillizza

Posted on 08/25/2010 8:26:10 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

It was an amazing night -- and morning -- as the final primary day of the summer delivered a series of upsets in Senate, gubernatorial and House races.

The Fix is still a little groggy from our live-blogging of the proceedings but we are never too tired to sift through election results to find some of the less obvious winners and losers from the primary night that was.

Our take is below. Have winners and losers of your own? The comments section awaits.

WINNERS

Sarah Palin: Just when it looked like her influence in Republican primary fights was fading, Palin came back with a vengeance last night -- as all five of her endorsed candidates appeared headed to victories including Alaska attorney Joe Miller who led Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski with 98 percent of precincts reporting. Both Murkowski and Miller blamed/credited Palin with the result, which is rightly seen as the biggest upset of the 2010 cycle to date. The message? In Republican primaries -- particularly small turnout affairs -- the energy and enthusiasm that Palin can help create is invaluable.

Kendrick Meek: Meek's wide victory over billionaire Jeff Greene in last night's Senate Democratic primary in Florida should convince (at least some) of the doubters who don't think he has a chance to be competitive against former state House Speaker Marco Rubio (R) and Gov. Charlie Crist (I) this fall. And, given the wildly unpredictable nature of the Florida political landscape, anyone who tells you what is going to happen next in the Senate race (or any race) in the state is just not telling the truth.

If there was a better candidate in Arizona she would have endorsed him. Also, if you think her Miller endorsement is based on vengence there is use debating a fool. Should she have endorsed Murkowski???

“No, she’s not. She’s just lying like McCain. In fact, she is very much a McCain carbon copy.”

What makes you think she is ‘a McCain carbon copy’?

Don’t forget that EternalVigilance is the national chairman of a “third party” and thus has a vested interest in denigrating every other candidate.

Ah ha! Thanks editor-surveyor [interesting career path, perhaps?]

Seems there are several on this forum that fall into the ‘make a statement, but can’t defend it’ category. Now it makes sense. Have to say, folks like that won’t ever get any traction if they can’t explain themselves. Folks might even think they are a ‘liar, liar, pants on fire’ for a political purpose. ‘Tis a shameful thing.

Can't defend it? Sure I can. I just don't sit on FR all day waiting for you to make a post.

Fiorina's public policy positions are almost identical to McCain's. They both lie about being pro-life when they're not. They both support illegals except at election time. They both are not-that-thinly-veiled supporters of the gay agenda. Except at election time. It really doesn't take much to figure this out.

And Fiorina is a darling of McCain's politically, having been an important cog in his 2008 machine.

I don’t “denigrate” Republicans who are actually conservative. In fact, I probably do more for actual conservative Republicans than almost any of the party before principle GOP hacks that hang out on FR.

Poster wrote that Palin is ideologically identical to McCain. I put forth a challenge to defend the remark:

"Can't defend it? Sure I can." "Fiorina's public policy positions are almost identical to McCain's. They both lie about being pro-life when they're not. They both support illegals except at election time. They both are not-that-thinly-veiled supporters of the gay agenda. Except at election time. It really doesn't take much to figure this out. Last I checked, Fiorina isn't Palin. Furthermore, Fiorina isn't Boxer and Fiorina is is pulling ahead. Looks a pretty smart strategy. Perhaps you wanted Campbell, a purported conservative with some interesting ties??? No thanks. Now, Fiorina is the second of many candidates Palin has backed and both she and McCain represent a small portion in terms of ideological bent. Love to know what you mean by supporters of the 'gay agenda' Does that mean marriage, which I suspect both McCain and Fiorina would be against, if for no other reason than they don't want to open the door to polygamy as embraced by some cultures? If you mean same sex benefits for a legal partner, including the ability to have a doctor discuss the medical condition of a mate, well, I'd say you are accurate. I also support that position. Since I believe in the Constitution, I will not object to people living their lives as they see fit, unless it tramples my right to do the same [which also includes paying benefits to a guy with four wives and a bb team of kids] Plenty of folks don't believe homosexuality is 'natural', others don't presume to judge, many don't believe in treating them as a protected class nor one that is discriminated against by the government. Some might even think this population is such an abomination they don't belong on the earth. In which case, I suggest they embrace Shariah. It has the solution they might seek. And re the abortion issue, isn't pro-life a choice? The left has co-opted the Choice meme, which has become distorted to mean pro-abortion. Palin herself has stated she understood why some women in her situation would consider an abortion. She did not. Seems like choice in action. I would, however; like the adoption process to be more 'friendly' to the birth mother, so more women would choose life. Would you really mandate that a woman must bear a child under any circumstances? If you think there are exceptions, then just who will judge? And you think there won't be payoffs to get 'approval'? So...No sale here. Play again sometime!

Yeah, you PDS types will not stand up for whom you currently support will you? Any public figures in your possible candidate world?

“”One of the favorites floated by this crowd is Senator Jim DeMint who, like Sarah Palin, is a rock-ribbed Conservative. Others are Ron Paul supporters, a few Mitt Romney backers, and a handful of local-Congressman-X-for-President folks.

The problem is that most of them have gone so over-the-top in their criticisms of Sarah Palin, demands for absolute perfection, moving of the goalposts, and impossible standards, that nobody could pass their test(s) anymore. Heck, DeMint tried to give us all Romneycare, and was pimping Grahamnesty on America back when we had a shot to oust him in the primaries. He just helped recruit RINO Dino Rossi in WA to defeat tea Party favorite Clint Didier. Inhofe was early and fast behind Fiorina in California. Ron Paul? Well......do we even need to go there? The list is endless....why? Because nobody is perfect.

These candidates, however, will all get as many “mulligans” as required from this same crowd that won’t accept anything less than godlike perfection from Sarah Palin. She can’t have any “mulligans,” though, no sir! But let’s get real, the exact same people would still be blasting Sarah even if she had endorsed Hayworth, because they just don’t like her, period. It’s just that the McCain endorsement lets them pretend they have an actual justification for their PDS.

They’ll quickly forget their litmus tests and impossible standards, and suddenly adopt a new level of forgiveness, if/when “their guy” is in the running. Grahamnesty could be the filibuster-breaking vote that puts a 5th Communist on the Supreme Court, but you can bet your ass they won’t hold it against Jim DeMint.

It’s personal, and it’s personal against Sarah Palin.””

People should read your words again, because they are entirely correct.

Yeah, well said. As for me personally, I declared two things, and I stick with them.

1. I will never again vote for a RINO, and I get to decide who is a RINO.

2. If Mrs. Palin runs, she has my vote UNLESS someone comes up who can make me believe that he/she is the better candidate. As of today, I don't see anyone out there.

I am just fed up with the PDS crowd slapping her around verbally on every thread that has her name in it, and some that don't. The same things are said by every one of them like clockwork. I understand dissent, but this is getting old and irritating, so I decided to ask the question: “Who is your possible candidate ?” Not one word, just more pontificating BS and no answer.

So, I took the offensive and stirred that ant's nest a bit. I intend to keep doing that and by now, thanks to the constant yammering, we all know who they are. So let's see who is for whom, and let's remember that this is not a one way street.

No McPalin shouldn’t have endorsed Murkowski, however, if it wasn’t for her personal feud with the Murkowskis, I’m sure she would have, since Lisa Murkowski is female, and it seems that McPalin mostly endorsed women... and John McCain.

It doesn’t seem like conservatism played any role in McPalin’s endorsements.

“Senator McCain picked Governor Palin to be his running mate and quite possibly the Vice President of the United States of America. If she had backstabbed him you’d be on here complaining that she didn’t have any loyalty and was therefore not “presidential timber” for 2012.”

Do you think Palin said something to McCain, like, “Look, John, if you duck left again, I’ll take you out.”?

Hehehe!
I gotta believe that there was a conversation along these lines.
