Sarah Palin is often cast as a reincarnation of Pat Buchanan, who tapped into the nationalist, even nativist, sentiment that's always been a strand of American political life.
But in one important respect, as Josh Rogin points out today, Palin is the anti-Buchanan: She's emerged as the spokeswoman for a hawkish, confrontational, Cheneyite foreign policy that would make Buchanan shudder. She just posted a rather long foreign policy speech to Facebook, and it's worth a read.
And she's fighting an important battle inside the loosely organized conservative grass roots to head off calls from some tea party types and fiscal conservatives like Mitch Daniels to shrink government in part by cutting defense spending:
Palin's drive to lead the charge against defense cuts on the right was on display in a June 27 speech at "Freedom Fest," a conservative gathering in Norfolk, VA, where she sent a clear message to Republicans that deficit reduction can't come at the expense of the military.
"Something has to be done urgently to stop the out of control Obama-Reid-Pelosi spending machine, and no government agency should be immune from budget scrutiny," she said. "We must make sure, however, that we do nothing to undermine the effectiveness of our military

Palin is Wilsonian? And what are you smoking?
Here is a link to the transcript of Sarah speech.

That she does, for sure. Mama Grizzly is not just a cute slogan. Other Republicans politicians—Mitch Daniels, Romney—name them. They all are pussy-footers. But Palin seems to feel she has nothing to lose and is aiming at the fences while they hope to win by other means.
The last Wilsonian president was FDR. But somewhere along the line, someone hung this tag on Bush. Despite the rhetoric, Bush was no Wilson.
Thank God she’s someone who is facing the truth and stating it. It’s refreshing.

LOL!!! Still applies!
As I made clear, her Wilsonianism is limited to foreign policy e.g. a desire to use the federal government to spread democracy throughout the world. If this interpretation is wrong, tell me why. Be specific. Let's forget the soundbites for now.

Obama is not a pacifist. A pacifist would not send more troops to Afghanistan than Bush ever had nor feel so willing to reign death through drone attacks. A pacifist is a principled opponent of war. By his actions, Obama has shown himself to be a warmonger, much to the consternation of Kucinch, Cindy Sheehan and others.
Wilson was Mr. League of Nations, looking to tame and subsume American power. Palin’s not into saving the world with American troops. She may be into projecting American power and preserving American interests abroad more than some (or many) isolationists would like, but it’s not at all that she’s a Global Do-Gooder. At least not the way I read her.
Palin said during the campaign that the U.S. make every effort possible to help spread democracy for those who desire freedom, independence, tolerance, respect for equality. In a September 2008 interview with the CBS Evening News, Palin said the promotion of democracy is the underlying goal in U.S. counterterrorism efforts. It's not just to keep the people safe, but to be able to usher in democratic values and ideals [around] the world,
Again, Billy Kristol is no fool. He knows that Sarah supports his pro-democracy agenda.
Buchanan, Cheney?....Politico avoids the truth.
Palin's foreign policy speech sounds like Reagan.

Palin's own position is very much that of a global do-gooder. She doesn't want to do it through the UN but not only because she doesn't think the UN is serious about the Wilsonian goal of spreading demcoracy. Interestingly, that is precisely the position of the neocons, who see the U.S. the "vanguard" for democracy. That's why Kristol likes her so much. Let me quote from the horse's mouth:

Reagan, unlike Palin and her neocon debate coach Billy Kristol, understood the limits of world policing, hence his wise decision to avoid a quagmire in Lebannon.
A pacifist may or may not be a person of principle.
She was a frigging VP candidate—it doesn’t make sense to hold her to what she said then.
Fine...then give me post-campaign quotations, etc. in which she now rejects the goal of “spreading democracy” via U.S. force of arms. I presented facts. Now, its your turn. Until you present evidence to the contrary, I’ll take Sarah at her word.
A pacifist is someone who opposes ALL war and military violence. Obama, who is currently reigning death on Afghan civilians and sending more troops into combat, is not a pacifist, principled and otherwise by either his words or actions.
