Days after being endorsed by Sarah Palin, Indian-American Nikki Haley surged ahead in polls for the Republican primary for the post of Governor of the US State of South Carolina.
Haley, a poll on Thursday showed, had grabbed a double digit lead over her closest Republican rival while previous polls had shown her fourth in the field.
The 38-year-old Republican, born to Indian immigrants from Amritsar, led the poll conducted by Rasmussen Reports, with the backing of 30 per cent of the 900 South Carolina Republicans who were surveyed. After her were the States Attorney General with 19 percent and a sitting Congressman with 17 per cent.
In an earlier poll in March, Haley was last in the four-person field with just 12 per cent support.
What changed was the ringing endorsement by Sarah Palin, who was John McCain's running mate for the 2008 US Presidential elections and has since emerged as an iconic figure among American conservatives.
During her endorsement speech last week, Palin described Haley as a kindred spirit.
Haley was born in Bamberg, South Carolina as Nimrata Randhawa, to a Sikh couple, Ajit and Raj Randhawa. She is married to Michael Haley and the couple has two children, Rena and Nalin.
I understand that she took the name from cousin Nikki in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”
If you put her on a future Presidential ticket, the GOP might carry NY and NJ.
Lol sounds like my friend SanJeeve. He can’t figure out why we don’t do the same thing with Obama.
My wife is Cuban. My in-laws come over on Saturday to watch a flick. They think I am too weak and liberal. I always thought I thought I was a raging right winger until I met ex-pats that escaped some commie hell hole.
I knew.
But probably the reason you didn't know is the following:
She is light-skinned, with no Indian dialect unless she wants to have one.
BTW, NOT GUILTY!
I had a friend whose parents escaped from Cuba. Father escaped from prison by bribing the guards. They would spit every time someone said John F. Kennedy. (They blame him for Castro). Big time conservative.

Did not know either. I’ve noticed that only certain races play the identity politics game.
Prior to the election, he knew Obama would win and that free elections were over. We'll see.
Me neither. I had no idea she was Indian.
She looked like any other candidate to me, just prettier than most.
I did know that, but she’s a Christian. Read it on her website. nikkihaley.com
