Poll: Whitman's lead over Poizner crumbles
Sacramento Bee ^ | 5/19/10 | Jack Chang

The past month has not been kind to Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman.

The first hit came when her rival Steve Poizner and unions went after her ties to the investment firm Goldman Sachs just as federal investigators launched a criminal probe into the company.

Republicans around the country then started rallying around a controversial Arizona law targeting illegal immigrants at the same time Poizner claimed the tough-on-immigration mantle in the race.

The toll the attacks have taken on Whitman's once-unbeatable candidacy became clear Wednesday, when the first major public poll to be released since March showed that Whitman's 50-point lead over Poizner among likely Republican primary voters had collapsed to just nine percentage points.

"Meg Whitman was a fresh candidate," said Thad Kousser, a UC San Diego political science professor. "It's easy to fall in love with them but it's easy to fall out of love with fresh candidates with every piece of new information you know about them."

The latest poll was conducted by the nonprofit Public Policy Institute of California. Its most telling number, said president Mark Baldassare, was the 31 percent of Republicans who remain undecided

Would Poizner be any better than Whitman...or Arnold? It seems that the CA Rs are having a RINO fest.

We will justifiably hate Poizner, he sucks, but believe it or not, he is well to the right of Meg Whitman.

This is ugly business, but it is the way that it is.

Hilarious!
I can’t figure out which scumbag, Poizner or Whitman, to root against the hardest.

Personally, I don't see how Poizner pulls this out, but at least Meg is learning just how unpopular she is. This is whining, but I do resent being put in this position of having to choose among such debris in California, I am just about done with this state.

To give you a hint of who sucks less, Tom McClintock endorsed Steve Poizner, and Mitt Romney is Meg Whitman’s, behind the scenes guy.

Would Poizner be any better than Whitman...or Arnold? It seems that the CA Rs are having a RINO fest.

The tell-tale sign between the two is Meg Whitman's unabashed support for tax-payer abortions, while Poizner admits he is Pro-Choice, but against tax-payer abortions and wants to work towards zero abortions in California.

One is a full-throated supporter of killing babies, the other wants to stop the practice.

If I can't trust someone to defend the most defenseless in society, I sure as hell cannot trust them to handle the financial mess in California.

Furthermore, Poizner has come out strong on border issues, while Meg says basically she has problems with AZs new Immigration law.

Illegals, and the benefits they steal from California's taxpayers are the main budgetary item causing the deficits here.

11+ billion/year

If you can't trust Whitman to deal with this problem, then you surely cannot trust her to fix the financial mess we are in.

Really? Well, that settles it enough for me. If that liberal Romney thinks Whitman is that gal, she isn’t for me.

The main problem I have with Poizner is that he has tried to have Prop 13 repealed - that makes him a non-starter for me.

McClintock endorsed Poizner???
That makes no sense on the face of it. Did somebody come up with pictures?
What on earth has happened to Tom?
I figured he’d stay way clear of both of these scumbags.

Sorry, but supporting Baby Killing kind of trumps your Prop-13 issue.

Don't get me wrong, they are both less than desirable, but if I have to grit my teeth and vote for someone, it won't be somebody so callous, and yes, so evil, that they support taxpayer supported abortion.

If you don’t care about the election and making a choice, then why bother to do so much heavy breathing here?

Having a pro-life governor will not end abortion but losing Prop 13 will totally destroy life in California if the politicians are able to tax property mercilessly. I don’t support abortion but the governor will not make the laws and Poisner is not pro-life just not pro public funds for abortion. With the economic climate the way it is even Witless and the legislature won’t be able to push public abortion funding.

Absolutely!
The sick scumbag Poizner wants the rat legislature to be able to raise taxes by a simple majority vote, and he wants rat-controlled municipalities to be able to raise real estate taxes as high as they want to, totally unchecked.

I am still shaking my head that McClintock endorsed him... How old is McClintock, anyway? Is he like, real old? ...Maybe getting a little wifty?

Whitman is a Romney girl, she first supported Romney in 1994, she worked on his campaign in 2007 and then was loaned by him to McCain for 2008.

Romney sold his Massachusetts home to move here to California to help Whitman take the Governorship, and then to use her, to catapult him to the 2012 nomination.

Romney has a lot of marbles in this basket.

Your rather disturbing imagination aside, I can comment on any thread I want to. And obviously I care about this election or I wouldn't be commenting here, now would I?

Are you drunk?
