You know the GOP race for governor is tightening when Meg Whitman brings out the big gun - former Gov. Pete Wilson - to defend her position on illegal immigration.
Wilson, chairman of Whitman's campaign, is now appearing in a radio ad arguing that Whitman will be "tough as nails" on the issue.
"This is former Gov. Pete Wilson. I know how important it is to stop illegal immigration and I know Meg Whitman," he says in the spot. "Meg will be tough as nails on illegal immigration. She'll fight to secure our border and go after sanctuary cities."
It's a play Whitman advisers would have preferred not to make as they look ahead to a general election contest in California, where Wilson is persona non grata with many Latino voters . . .

RINOs should kill themselves. They spend their days torturing their brains, trying to be liberal and conservative, and when they are found out on one topic to be on the wrong side (due to polling, only), they flop back, saying they never really meant what they said.
RINOs. I’m done with them.
Pete Wilson!? I never liked him either.
Wilson was a model RINO, but stealthy about it.
Very eloquent!!
So exactly how the hell do you “fight” illegal immigration with a state full of sanctuary cities, PETE?? You’re the same weasel and super-RINO you were in office.
Democrats suck. Democrats pretending to be Rs are worse.
Wilson rushing in with a bucket of gas as Meg’s campaign burns to the ground. Good to have friends.
I always despised Pete Wilson, he was arrogantly, in your face anti-social conservative.
Oddly, when it came to immigration, he seemed strangely tough, and brave, but that isn’t why he is endorsing Whitman, that is really because of his liberalism.
Like the Jedi Master said,
“There is DO or DO NOT, There is no TRY.”
The media likes to make it seem like illegal aliens are the third rail of politics in California, but that's not the case. Not tapping the anger of the voters at these continued deficit budgets, ever expanding state services, ever expanding state taxes, and the unions that seem to hold Sacramento in a vice hold is just plain stupid, and a recipe for disaster.
Whomever wins the Republican nomination has to offer a counter to Governor Moonbeam. Has to offer a choice. Moonbeam light just ain't going to cut it, and honestly, I doubt anyone in the current field has the guts to really put up a real fight and put it on the table. Republicans should make the election for governor be a referendum on the state senate and assembly. ‘Do you want the state to continue down the path of disaster, or do you want to send an impossible to miss message to Sacramento: This is our state.’
Instead it'll be yet another ho-hum campaign, with a few gems that’ll be miss quoted from the debates, and Jerry Brown will be the next governor of California.
