Tommy Thompson Has Big Lead Over Feingold in New Poll
Politics Daily ^ | 4/6/2010 | Bruce Drake

Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, who is said to be edging closer toward a race against Sen. Russ Feingold, leads the Democratic incumbent in a match-up by 45 percent to 33 percent with 14 percent preferring an independent or third party candidate and 7 percent undecided, according to a St. Norbert College Survey Center poll conducted March 23-31.

The conservative Weekly Standard reported in late March that Thompson "has spent the past several weeks taking the steps any candidate must take in order to run for office -- he's evaluating staff, he's talking to fundraisers, and he's separating himself from his business interests."

Thompson has said chances of him getting into the race are "50-50" and that he would decide before the state's GOP convention, which is May 20.

Could we eliminate those Anti-First-Amendment jerks Comrade Juan McNuts and Feingold all in one election cycle? Please?

Mr. Feingold has very very very "deep pockets" and he's not even begun to spend $$$ yet on the campaign.

Wait until his "dirty tricks" group begins to dig up the dirt on Thompson.

We'd better have a stronger candidate than Thompson...or a far richer one!

I thought the GOP missed a good opportunity by not running Tommy Thompson for President in 2008. Like Fred, he was not particularly adept at the dog and pony show. But he had a superb record and crossover appeal.

The average voter tends to like competent conservatives when they can get through the media b.s. screen. The enemedia would have had a real problem sliming Tommy Thompson, just like they will if he jumps in the senate race now.

The sheeple have now seen plenty of youth and novelty by now. I think they are ready to give demonstrated competence and boring the nod now.

What kind of dirt can they did up on a former competent and popular governor. “He’s too old and boring” is about it.

Why is that? If there is a guy in politics that has worn out his welcome more plus is a worse fit for his constituents, please elucidate.

Either St Norbett has it in for this Eastern libtard or Master Feingold is toast. 33 percent approval this late in the game is usually fatal.

I suspect some new rules will apply in this election cycle. To wit: More and more Americans are realizing that zero has to be contained and getting rid of rats is one method. America is realizing that zero may be a muslim plant and at best is up to no good for America, as a socialist, the likes we have never seen in the WH!

This will be excellent news especially if Pataki opts in as well.

Deep pockets? He’s among the least wealthy member of our legislature. The union money may flow in but this year, thaks to Alito, etc., corporations are allowed to opt in as well.

I've been a little skeptical of St. Norbert polls. But Foolsgold stepped on it (with golf shoes, too boot) when he toured the state with his "listening sessions" last year. More like "I'm not listening sessions". Folks found out real quick what an elitist, statist that dirty SOB is.

Tom Jensen of Public Policy Polling speaks of "The Corzine Line":

"Jon Corzine's approval was a net -23 on our final poll before the New Jersey Governor's race, with 34% of voters in the state giving him good marks and 57% bad ones. Anyone polling below the Corzine line seems like a pretty good bet to be defeated."

"There are actually only three politicians up for reelection this year in our recent polling who find themselves in that category. One is Blanche Lincoln at 27/62, who most political observers do expect to lose. Another is Deval Patrick at 22/59. He may be saved by the presence of a third party candidate in his race but it's still really hard to see him surviving with those kind of approval numbers. The third is Pat Quinn, whose approval is 25/53 in numbers we'll release tomorrow. That's pretty unpopular but it's also a really Democratic state- will the negative feelings about Quinn or the overall blue tone of the state dictate what happens this fall? "

If Tommy Thompson had enough initiative to run for President in 2008, certainly he should have the gumption to run for Senate in 2010. It sounds like all he has to do is announce, and the Feingold is defeated.

You raise good points, but a lot of us think Tommy is the only reasonable solution. While he is a RINO, he's a better than Feingold. Tommy is respected statewide, the other GOP candidates are good, but they’re not known.

The biggest issue in the Wisconsin senate race is keeping the vote honest. Between Milwaukee and Dane county its always suspect and there's some changes the dems are trying to slide through right now that will make voter fraud even easier.

you must be thinking of Herb Kohl. he has more money than God.

Feingold is one of the poorest members of the Senate.

Tommy Thompson is an idiot RINO.
Also a board member of VeriChip and outspoken proponent of making people get implanted with one. However, he’s too late. Obamacare beat him to it with that mandate of which I’m sure he’s happy.

Wisconsin, you can’t do any better than this?

Mr Feingold was one of the poorest when elected. Not that a University professor is poor. He does quite well for himself these days, and his Senate account had three million going into 2010... not awe-inspiring, but not bad. Mr “I’ll never take PAC money” is taking PAC money, now, by the way.
