Tom Campbell: The Demon Sheep gave us our "greatest day of contributions"
SFGate: Politics Blog ^ | 2/5/10 | Joe Garofoli

Greetings from Demon Sheep Central, where US Senate candidate Tom Campbell says that the Demon Sheep gave him his best online fundraising day ever.

OK, so not that Campbell has ever been a fundraising dynamo. Plus, as Team Fiorina spokesperson Julie Soderlund points out to Demon Sheep Central: "His best day of fundraising could be $5 since he just got into the race 3 weeks ago!"

But still, Tom's Big Day was a riff off an attack ad by Team Fiorina ripping him. Well, as we told you earlier, Team Campbell wisely saw the Demon Sheep wave cresting and got out in front of it -- it included the video (despite its rips on Tom) in a fundraising pitch Thursday.

Campbell told KPCC's Patt Morrison Friday afternoon that he thought the ad is "exceptionally nasty."

"But what makes it a news story is that it's so awful, so over the top, that it actually helps me," Campbell told the SoCal public radio host. "The result is the greatest day of contributions on line at Campbell.org. in the entire campaign."

As we've told you before, Teacher Tom the mild-mannered professor doesn't like smacking down opponents. Way back when -- nearly a month ago now -- when Tom was running for Guv, he would refuse to say his opponents names when saying something even minorly critical of them.

1. I agree with Campbell and others that the ad was so freaky deaky — so fiscal conservatives are sheep, now? — that its harm to Fiorina outweighs its benefit to her (or its harm to Campbell. whatever).

2. I like Campbell personally and would have voted for the 1988 version of him. But he’s drifted well to the left since then, including on financial issues, such as a proposed tax on gas IN CALIFORNIA, IN 2009. In-sane.

No way I can vote for him in an election these days except as some sort of “prevention against something even worse.”

All Campbell has to do is to confront Ms Fiorina with her (paraphrasing) “Americans have no right to a job” as she defended H-P’s offshoring.

“But he’s drifted well to the left since”

That is the big problem is a nutshell. However I would take him over that nutcase Boxer.

Campbell was a Rino before the term was coined. He voted with the Democrats back when the Gipper was president. He was one of our side’s absolute worst congressmen in the eighties. He makes McCain look like Jesse Helms.

I thought that the ad’s weirdness would overwhelm its message.
