CNN Poll: Most say worst economic conditions in a lifetime

More than three-quarters of Americans said that the current economic conditions are the worst that they've ever lived through, according to a new national poll.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Wednesday, hours before President Obama delivers his first State of the Union address, indicated that 77 percent of the public feels that the rough economic times the country's currently facing are the worst in their lifetime, while 22 percent said they've lived through worse times.

According to the poll, the economy remains the number-one issue on the public's mind, and six in ten Americans said it is extremely important for the president and Congress to deal with the economy this year.

"That's one reason why Barack Obama's State of the Union speech is likely to focus on the economy," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "The belief that the economy is extremely important is the same among high-income Americans and low-income Americans. And income does not affect your view of economic conditions - high-income Americans are just as likely as low-income Americans to say that this is the worst economy they have ever lived through."(continued)

That sure is good news for the Democrats, 'cause I'm sure they'll all blame President Bush for how bad things are, just like Mr. Obama does! /s

"More than three-quarters of Americans said that the current economic conditions are the worst that they've ever lived through,..."

Current economic conditions? As in the Obama years? I thought they thought it was living hell under the Bush years with that ghastly 4.5% unemployment and those "huge" $200 billion dollar budget deficits?

Just like they continue to blame Hoover for being a free market capitalist in handling the Depression, which is absolutely untrue.

For 7.5 years UNDER BUSH everything was fine- until the democraps talked the economy into the tank

W was stupid enough to let the democraps talk him into the bailout- just like his old man was stupid enough to fall for the tax hikes.

The should have let the mortgage brokers fail and PUT THE BLAME WHERE IT BELONGED- BARNEY FRANK AND CHRISS DODD

I’m with you Mr. K. All during the 2000’s people were living high on the hog until coincidentally the Congress changed hands. It’s just unbelievable how people buy into this nonsense. Not defended Bush here, but honestly, people need to get a grip!

I'm not making light of the current conditions or dismissing the suffering the unemployed are going through right now, but did the people who were polled forget the 1970s, or even the first couple years of the 80's. We had double-digit unemployment, we had much worse stagflation, we had interest rates through the roof and we had lines for gas that sometimes approached a mile long.

I'm not saying we aren't going to get there, but we aren't there now.

I remember that period of time quite well. This time it will be much worse.

The only thing missing is the lines for gasoline.

I would like to see Fox go back to Bush’s days when all the Democrats were saying the economy was as bad as it’s ever been. I remember Al Gore and the speech where he went on and on about how bad things were, up was down, what should be good was bad.

I’d like to see them play a bit of one of those speeches, then show what the unemployment, etc. was then. Then show where the indicators are now.

I remember those days. The period between say 1974-82 was pretty tough. Inflation, unemploymnet, political unrest, no one seemed to have an idea about how to fix things. I remember some people saying things were never going to get better, but were going to get worse and that we were going to have to get used to it.

We are not at that point yet.

Can anyone spell C A R T E R? The worst president ever in terms of the economy, Jimmy Carter was the epitome of how to do everything wrong.
