Tom Campbell leads GOP Senate poll
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 1/21/10 | Carla Marinucci, Chronicle Political Writer

Days after jumping into California's U.S. Senate race, moderate Republican Tom Campbell has catapulted into the lead as the top GOP candidate and the strongest potential foe of incumbent Democrat Barbara Boxer, a development that may herald a more competitive race in the Democratic-leaning state, a new Field Poll shows.

The poll results suggest that shock waves from Republican Scott Brown's Senate upset this week in the Massachusetts special election could extend to California in the fall.

Campbell, a former South Bay congressman and dean of UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business - and not a favorite of the state's GOP establishment - received 30 percent support from California voters in the latest statewide Field Poll released today.

That puts Campbell ahead of two Republicans who've been campaigning and fundraising for months - former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, with 25 percent support, and state Assemblyman Chuck Devore, who has 6 percent. Thirty-nine percent of likely GOP voters were undecided.

The poll among 958 likely state voters in the November general election and 202 likely voters in the June GOP primary was conducted Jan. 5-17, as Campbell withdrew from the California gubernatorial contest and declared himself to be a Senate candidate.

If the election were held today, no GOP candidate could defeat Boxer, the poll shows. Campbell is closest, 10 points behind the three-term Democrat.

In CA we’ll certainly have a “moderate” but what is this guy like? Is he at least acceptable on fiscal and defense issues?

I’m sure he will, don’t get me wrong! I’d support ANYONE, even another Dem, who could knock that icy old hag out of office.

Still, it’s nice to know.

Remember not to refer to her as “Mam”, after all, she is a Sinator (spelling is correct).

My take is he’s a social liberal and a fiscal conservative. And yes, he would be better than Boxer.

If the political situation is radioactive for the Democrats now, imagine how it will be in ten months. I expect Comrade Boxer to be fighting for her political life before the year is over.

a social liberal and a fiscal conservative

??? uhhhmmm, there’s NOTHING conservative about Campbell... complete liberal! Has been his whole career and he was proud to declare that he was the liberal Rockefeller Repub in past races. DeVore is the only conservative in the race and he has a good track record... so he’ll be trashed by the national party operatives as usual. Support DeVore and get a good Senator, not the lessor of two evils!

6% isn’t a good place to start from.

I’d like to hear more about Campbell: how much of a big-government, academic-thinking kind of a guy is he?

Acceptable but not great. He's pretty bad on 2A stuff as well.

However, as has been said before, he has to be better than Boxer.

I'll support whichever candidate looks like they can unseat her.

He will be an improvement for California and for the country but probably a drag on the Republican Party.
