From January 1995 to December 2002, Gary Johnson served as the Governor of the State of New Mexico, and was the first governor in the history of New Mexico to be elected for two consecutive four year terms. He was ranked among the nation's seven top governors in each of the Cato Institute's fiscal report cards between 1996 and 2002. Under Gov. Johnson's administration, New Mexico experienced the longest period without a tax increase in the state's history, the rate of growth in the state government was cut in half, half of the state's prisons were privatized, state Medicaid was shifted to managed care, and the state was left with approximately one thousand fewer employees (with no firings) and a budget surplus. Gov. Johnson vetoed 750 bills (which was more than all the vetoes of the other 49 Governors in the country at that time, combined), which earned him the nickname Gary "Veto" Johnson.
Gov. Johnson is not only a conservative but he has a proven track record during his two terms in New Mexico of SHRINKING government, cutting budgets, reforming healthcare, introducing a voucher system for schools.
Sounds like a perfect candidate in 2012...
what say you, freepers?
There's a few issues like he says he is personally pro-choice but was endorsed by the right to life committee for his bans on partial-birth abortion and Medicaid-funded abortion which means he supports States on abortion.
He is also a Ron Paul fan and the only GOP Governor not to endorse George W. Bush which made him an outcast with the Establishment. I dont see that as a bad thing and would help him in an election against Obama. He's also libertarian on drugs, again though this isn't an issue as he would be support States rights.
SO on the balance I don't see how he isn't a bad candidate, much more appealing than Palin to a general electorate too and from his time in New Mexico shows he can win big in Democrat areas which will need to be cracked to take the Presidency off Obama and his organizing zombie like drones, no way would Palin do that.
He really does have a great record if you can see past his potential faults.
I thought you meant this Gary Johnson.
We could use another "actor" in the White House.
Run, Gary run! I met him in 2000, thanked him for his stance & work on MJ legalization, along with everything he did for NM. We chatted for a while, and he went back to work. He was good for New Mexico. I would vote for him if he ran.
he says he’s potentially interested in a 2012 bid but obviously very early stages yet.
"(H)e is personally pro-choice"..."He's also libertarian on drugs"...
BYE!
So???
Palin/Johnson 2012? Or perhaps Johnson/Palin 2012? The perfect ticket, either way, IMHO
well who else is there? Romney is finished, Huckabee would never beat Obama and neither would Palin
on drugs Johnson supports States rights, an entirely constitutional and correct approach. on abortion he has been endorsed by right to life
Look at his record, he has a great record of actually shrinking government, cutting budgets etc. I.E WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE IN WASHINGTON and he can WIN. This is key, not his stance on a few issues. The US is going to be a mess by 2012 and someone with that record will be needed to clean it up. someone you know who can get the job done and has done so before, in a 2:1 Democrat state. He can beat Obama
PING to the NM list.
States rights libertarian/conservative.
We could do worse.
He was a good Governor.
“He is a Ron Paul fan” Oh well, that means his position on the war against Islamo Fascism is the same as Obama.
Pass. Next candidate please.
I think Johnson is a superior candidate to Palin. while she has many fans I think she’d just do what McCain did and couldn’t win in the places that matter.
Johnson can beat Obama in Democrat states and carry the independents.
“He’s also a libertarian on drugs”. Umm, you might want to rephrase that. I mean, I’ve known a lot of libertarians on drugs and I wouldn’t vote for any of them for President.
What’s the problem. This is our third president in a row who used cocaine.
well, the US is bankrupt and can’t afford war anyway so what’s the problem... ?
Johnson bringing troops home from Afghanistan and Iraq will save the US trillions from the rapidly rising deficit. it will also guarantee electoral victory and Obama out on his ass. imagine when you see Johnson pledging to bring troops home, how will The One and all his anti-war liberal whackos run against that?
They’re all on drugs if you ask me. At least they seem to be once they get to D.C.
Is that going to be his position? Bring the troops home?
Nixon promised to end Vietnam war. anti-war Republicans are not new and it wins elections and will make Obama like a dumbass.
No problem as long as you want to stay in your house and not go into a skyscraper, fly overseas, go to work, go to a theatre, go to a football game, go to a cafe or go to church.
i’m pretty sure he will want to do that, not for ideological reasons but probably more to save money and shrink the budgets.
