headed to Davol Square on Tuesday to hear state Rep. Elizabeth M. Betsy Dennigan, D-East Providence, announce that she will be challenging U.S. Rep. James R. Langevin in a Democratic primary next year. And as I was picking my way through the crowd, past the banners, balloons and a three-piece band, I bumped into a congressional candidate shaking hands.
Only it wasnt Dennigan. Or even a Democrat.
It was state Rep. John J. Loughlin II, R-Tiverton, the House minority whip who plans to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy next year.
Was he there to launch a Republicans-for-Betsy organization? No, he said.
Loughlin, whos supporting Republican Mark Zaccaria in the race for Langevins seat, noted that Dennigan is a House colleague. He said he was taking notes on the logistics and stagecraft of announcing a congressional candidacy.
And I think there are a lot of talented folks in the House that could serve our country well in Congress, the former stand-up comedian deadpanned, referring to himself.
Loughlin, 50, is serving his fifth year in the General Assembly. He owns Media-Rite, a company that produces TV ads and corporate videos. And he is a helicopter pilot who retired from the Army Reserve as a lieutenant colonel.
So what makes him think he can beat Kennedy a member of one of Americas best-known political families, a Democrat in one of the bluest states, a 14-year incumbent with a vast fundraising network who, in the most recent reports, had $340,000 in his campaign account while Loughlin had $46,000?
I think for the first time I represent a legitimate challenge, Loughlin said. The voters have not had a choice before, really, and I hope to give them that choice.

Under normal circumstances, this would be a lark. But IMHO, the voters are becoming tired of Kennedy, who is back in rehab. Also, Loughlin is a credible candidate in his own right and the mood of the public is turning in our direction.
Why would RI contiue to vote for the dumbest of the clan?
If Loughlin can raise the available funds, maybe they won’t continue to.
As a truck driver, I am subject to "random" drug tests. I am responsible for the "direction my vehicle" moves and must not have anything in my system to impair my vision or judgment. Public officials are charged with the responsibility of the "direction of the country". I would think that at the very least, officials should be faced with randoms, and then face the same, if not greater consequences as I, such as "suspensions" and "revocation" of the privilege to direct the "vehicle"..
I think Kennedy drinks in rehab. The SOB is always there.
Could be he chases tail there...
Yeah. His own.
;-)
*snicker*
What, you don’t think he could take advantage of a captive audience ? :-P
Are you ready for the punchline?
The above story is from April, 2001.
It's Rhode Island. The place is hopeless.
Is this the drunken junkie Kennedy who crashed his car in the middle of the night in DC and claimed he was “on his way (hic) to a vote”? Or is this the drunken junkie Kennedy who assaulted an airport security guard. The two got into a fight at Los Angeles International?
Maybe it’s the drunken junkie Kennedy who trashed a rented yacht to the tune of $28,000? Or the drunken junkie Kennedy who took a girl out on that same yacht only to terrorize the girl so badly she had to summon the Coast Guard to rescue her?
Oh wait! It’s all the SAME Kennedy. Rhode Island’s own Patrick Kennedy. And once again Rhode Island will re-elect that simple p.o.s. in a landslide. Hey, it’s Rhode Island, where the collective IQ is apparently lower than a litter of mice.
Now this is one incumbent I’d REALLY like to see tossed out.
