Former Republican Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert's son, Ethan Hastert, has announced he'll run for his father's Chicago-area seat in Congress.
The 31-year-old Hastert said Monday he would begin campaigning and fundraising for the 14th District seat. Dennis Hastert held the seat for 20 years and was the longest-serving Republican House Speaker. He announced in August 2007 that he would not seek reelection.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Bill Foster of Batavia won the seat in the November general election.
The younger Hastert has never held elected office. The self-described economic and social conservative grew up in Yorkville and now is an attorney from Elburn.
He says he hopes to be part of the district's "next generation of leadership."

I think we have too many dynasties in politics today. I hope someone else can be persuaded to run. Chris Lauzen is my first choice.
I hope there’s a real conservative running against him in the primary.
Let’s hope he inherited someone else’s spine and “nether parts”.
I’d rather have Chris Lauzen try to recapture this seat. We don’t need another Hastert. Lauzen could have beaten Foster last year.
To some extent, as long as it denies the rats another seat, I don’t mind. We need the numbers to have some control of the agenda.
Let’s hope he was adopted.
No.
It's not fair to paint the son due to the sins of the father, but I don't like people that go into congress broke and end up very rich and the old man used his office to feather his nest.
or at least somebody else's honesty and integrity...
Ditto your NO. Didn’t Hastart do some big manipulating on some land deal where he lives and came out with millions at the taxpayers expense? Don’t need anymore of this family in my opinion.
Yes. Plus he left early which meant we had to have a special election, costing the taxpayers more money and got a liberal elected. And now he wants us to vote for his son? I don’t think so.
They never fall far from the tree. Never. Look at the Kennedy's, Clintons, yet each generation progressively gets worse. Maybe that is what they mean by the "Progressive Party", progressively worse.
Who should run for that seat? I think that State Senator J. Bradley Burzynski, who represents parts of the Rockford and De Kalb areas, is conservative, and he’s been a state senator since 1993.
In the summer of 2007, I said, on a few websites, “St. Sen. Lauzen should be elected to Congress. After he wins, Jim Oberweis should be appointed, to replace Lauzen, in the state senate.” I hope that many of the district’s voters agree that what should have happened.
I agree with this part, I bitterly disagree with the next sentence.
No more legacies, thank you.
Gee Dad that was easy, thanks for the lesson./sarc
