United States Representative Jim Gerlach tells 69 News he is considering a run for governor of Pennsylvania. Gerlach says he's been approached by members of the Republican Party about entering the race. He says he'll make up his mind about whether to run in the upcoming weeks. The next election for governor is in 2010. Gerlach was recently elected to a fourth term in Congress, representing parts of Berks, Chester, Lehigh, and Montgomery counties. Gerlach has also served in the Pennsylvania House and Senate. Attorney General Tom Corbett and former U.S. attorney in Philadelphia Patrick Meehan have also been mentioned as possible GOP candidates.

I voted for Gerlach when I lived there. Met him on a couple of occasions and really liked the guy, but I know Patrick Meehan and I know he’d make a great governor.

Gerlach is a hard worker and smart campaigner. Ever since he won his Philly suburb seat in 2002, the Dems have placed a bullseye on him. Yet he always manages to end up on top, while other Congressional Republicans flop in more friendly territory. Gerlach represent a key swing region of PA. The key to a GOP revival in PA is for conservatives to reconnect with the Philly suburbs.

He would be the strongest candidate. But, we would likely end up losing this seat. Philly suburbs are trending Dem.

I’d rather Gerlach ran for Senator. Atty Gen Tom Corbett is our strongest candidate for Governor. One dark horse favorite of mine for Governor, however, is Hazelton Mayor and this year’s promising Congressional hopeful, Lou Barletta. Perhaps Lynn Swann would consent to run for Lt Governor with either.

Unfortunately Gerlach is as conservative as you'll get from PA.

The Philly burbs used to be reliably Republican, but you'll have to go back a ways to find a time (if there ever was one) when they were conservative. Even in their better days they heavily preferred Specter-type RINOs to anything resembling a true conservative.

Today those suburbs around Philly are largely either soccer mommies swooning over President-elect Buckwheat; limp-wrist soccer daddies who do whatever soccer mommy tells them; and sewage that has seeped out from the enormous Philly ghetto into the surrounding counties.

There may be some conservatives left in Bucks, Chester, MontCo or DelCo, but not many.

He ain’t so great ACU wise. But almost 20 points better than Specter lifetime. I’d support him over the old man. I don’t think he’d be the type to challenge him though.

His hanging on to his seat has been impressive. I don’t want see a major primary for Governor. We can’t risk PA’s streak of switching parties every 8 years.
