I know that a lot of Republicans and Conservatives in general have been disgusted, saddened and otherwise disenchanted with our GOP slate of candidates this year. John McCain seems intent upon driving all conservatives from the party and our Congressional Leadership, in the face of a growing national crisis of confidence fueled by historically high oil prices, seems incapable of action.
Well with all that said I wanted to share a little good news. There really ARE Conservative Republicans out there who hear what we're saying, aren't afraid to campaign as conservatives and who deserve our strong support. Jim Gilmore is one such candidate. Gilmore is running to replace the retiring RINO John Warner in the US Senate. I got an automated call from the Gilmore campaign last night. It was a 'poll' and the questions were asked by a computer using Gilmore's voice. The gist of the call was to let you know that Gilmore is running on a campaign to cut taxes and reduce gas prices. He wants to:
1. Increase Refinery Capacity
2. Increase Clean Coal Technology
3. Build more Nuclear Power Plants
4. Fund Alternative Fuels research
5. Drill in ANWAR and in deep water off our coasts!
Gilmore has got a winning message and deserves onservative support. I hope that there are others who will take his lead and run as a conservative.
I agree about stopping illegals. I just hope he doesn’t pull a “macaca” moment.
I shall be voting for him to represent my favorite Commonwealth as a U.S. Senator.
It beats the hell of having the “other” Warner take the job.
Sounds great to me, he’ll get my vote! He’ll need every vote he can get against Mark Warner.
At least there is one.
I think Gilmore’s got the right idea here.
No kidding though ytou probably wouldn't be able to tell the voting records apart if the new Warner were to win. Warner to Warner, that is.
Gilmore's been in tough races before and he's a much better campaigner than people give him credit for.
I lost confidence in Gilmore with the way he ran the RNC. He presided over some of the worst RINO behavior in the past didn’t he? I can’t recall his name but there’s a guy from the western part of the state that has a truly conservative agenda. I guess name recognition does have an advantage.
In the general election, how many voters will truly mistake the “Democratic Warner” with the “Republican Warner”, who is no longer running for that U.S. Senate seat?
Sadly, I think a snowball has a better chance in Hawaii. I’m afraid the Commonwealth will go solid red this Fall. 2006 showed Fairfax is much more D now than even 4 years ago and there are not enough large R enclaves in the state to overcome. The House of Delegates will probably fall too. By 2009 VA will look like MD politically. Sigh.
My guess.
Quite a Few. (unfortunately)
Gimore was pretty wishy-washy on gun rights when he was governor.
Supported Fairfax’s efforts to pass gun bans on govt. property and did his best to kill any pro-gun rights legislation.
Mark Warner actually was more pro-gun rights.
Hmmmmmmmm. . . Senate fundraisers contacted hubby and I about supporting Gilmore and a few other prospective Senators. We told them the answer would remain ‘no’ as long as Gilmore continued to mimic Tom Davis and other Republican wimps who think they can win re-election/election by skapegoating President Bush — I reminded them that the job approval rating for Congress is 20 points LOWER than the President’s. They promised to talk with the ‘principles’ and get back with us.
Well there you go...he’s got my support.
I hate to say it but to run as a conservative you have to run away from Bush and McCain by definition. Bush may be a conservative in his personal life but he certainly hasn’t governed like one.
“Bush may be a conservative in his personal life but he certainly hasnt governed like one.”

Really, by what standard? He has governed more conservatively than Ronald Reagan on EVERY measure.
[My family, friends and I are ACTIVE (conservative) Republicans — the type that Republican politicians MUST have in their corner to win. We will not support any Republican who bashes our President. Such a politician would lack the personal integrity and courage necessary to hold a leadership position in either the House or the Senate!]
We should have let NoVa secede when they wanted to.
Instead, we get Fairfax and Arlington and Alexandria wagging the dog for the rest of us in the Red parts of the state. . . .
