Republican primary gets nasty in North Carolina district
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram ^ | May 4, 2008 | Lisa Zagroli

Rep. Patrick McHenry says the candidates who want his seat in Congress don't want to talk about his voting record.

Unfortunately for the North Carolina Republican, there's plenty of other material for them to work with.

The contest has gotten so ugly that McHenry's GOP opponent has accused McHenry of putting American lives at risk after he returned from Baghdad - perhaps a new height in primary election squabbling.

"It's getting a little testy out there," said Michael Bitzer, a political science professor at Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C. "Campaigns are modern-day warfare, so you are going to pull out whatever ammunition that you can to attack an incumbent."

McHenry enters the state's primary on May 6 trying to shake off recent headlines from his first trip to Iraq, during which the two-term lawmaker referred to a man protecting a U.S. Embassy gym as a "two-bit security guard" and then filmed himself talking about the buildings hit by enemy fire.

His Republican opponent, Lance Sigmon of Newton, N.C., is airing a TV ad that essentially accuses McHenry of endangering Americans by giving away battle damage details. McHenry threatened to sue Sigmon if he didn't take the ad down, but Sigmon refused.

Issues and voting record aside, Patrick McHenry sounds like a grade-A horse’s ass. Referring to a one of America’s finest as a “two-bit security guard” really reflects badly on him. I hope he loses.

The previous Congressman, Cass Ballenger, has endorsed Lance Sigmon.

That incident was distorted and overblown by the media (later revealed that it was not a soldier he was talking about). I’d much rather see Walter Jones taken out, he’s the real embarrassment in NC.

His excuse has been that he was refering to a private security contractor (as if it makes his arrogant and obnoxious behavior any better).

In a war zone, rules and regulations serve to save idiots, like Rep. McHenry, from themselves.

"Referring to a one of America’s finest as a “two-bit security guard” really reflects badly on him." I have a hard time seeing mercenaries as America's finest. Not that they aren't doing necessary work. Legally, they actually sort of are security guards.

Patrick McHenry is a strong conservative, and a very decent man.

Patrick McHenry, for those of you who ever watch Congress on C-SPAN, is one of the few people willing to take on Nancy Pelosi and the other liberals.

Patrick McHenry has consistently defended innocent human life, and our military.

Patrick McHenry has been targeted by the liberals for three years because he is a consistent, relaible, sincere conservative with a spine who is NOT for sale.

The conservatives in McHenry’s district love him.

When the RINO’S got their comeuppence in 2006, and lots of conservatives stayed home, they still went out to vote FOR Patrick McHenry.

The RINO’s despise him, as do the good old boys.

Sigmon is a fraud.

“Issues and voting record aside?”

What does that mean? You admit he’s right on the issues, has a strong voting record, that you don’t know him, and yet, you’re accepting the media’s assessment of him?

The grade-A horse’s ass certainly is NOT Patrick McHenry.

Patrick McHenry is not arrogant, and he is only “obnoxious” to people who ignore our laws and want to kill us.

He has been targeted for his strong conservative positions.

Look carefully at what you are being told, examine the sources, and examine McHenry’s words AND deeds.

Look at his record, and watch how he handles Nancy Pelosi and co.

Only then will you see exactly what is going on.

Walter Jones is an embarrasment to NC and the country. That is why Jones is not being targeted. Patrick McHenry is being targeted by Nancy & co.

McHenry will probably win renomination handily. This is about crippling him for the general. Jones is an idiot for taking the positions he has in a military district, and there are even odds he could be dumped. We sacked Gilchrest in MD, so this may be another RINO going down.

I think you are right. However, if there was not a dem primary, they would be ordered to vote for McHenry’s opponent.

The libs, and that includes pro-illegal amnesty RINO’s, really want McHenry out of DC-badly.
