Pro-Fred AND Anti-Huck
The National Review ^ | December 10, 2007 | Jonathan Adler

Posted on 12/10/2007 7:48:02 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

A quick note about my various Huckabee postings. As many (most) readers know, I am supporting Fred Thompson in the Republican primary (and wrote an article explaining why in NRODT). This is not the reason why I have been posting so much that is critical of Huckabee, however. Rather, I find Huckabee's record and various positions to be particularly problematic, far more so than any of the other candidates. (Note I have not been posting items critical of the other candidates, even though I prefer Fred.) In my view, Huckabee is a big government populist liberal, not a conservative. In any event, I will do my best to remind Corner readers that I have cast my lot with one of the candidates, and that this may be reason to take some of what I post with an extra grain of salt.

Have I missed something about Fred Thompson? Some reason why Fox News will not give him coverage? Today, Brit came right out and dismissed him as having done nothing worth reporting. I was really troubled by this because Fred seems to be the only Republican who has come up with serious plans. He is endorsed by groups the others would have coveted, etc., etc. No wonder people are concerned about this country. Celebrities seem more important and get all the attention when we should be considering a new President. Whew! That feels better.

Fox is 200% in Rudy’s corner.

And that is why I don't watch FoxNews anymore.

I also do my best to inform everyone I can of their extreme un-mitigated bias towards Rudy and against Fred.

I consider them traitors to the conservative movement.

People and an organization I used to have a lot of respect for, but no more!

I will have to admit you have not been too critical of other candidates....unlike many other freepers who spam hate messages on Romney threads, etc.

I will happiply vote for Fred, should he get the nomination!

I don’t think Fox ever was conservative. It’s just a bit more to the right of CNN, NBC, etc... and not really because of principle...just a matter of dough [money].

I’m so thankful for a place like FR. Too bad we’re not on tv. It’d be a lot better than Reilly and the rest of their jokers.

No. you’ve not missed anything about Fred Thompson. You’ve just come face to face with The Big Fred Freeze Out. The theory is that if they don’t cover him, he can’t win. I continue to pray they are very very wrong.

Did you see the encouraging poll from Wisconsin? It looks like 30% of the Republican voters polled name him their top choice among the field. He places first with Giuliani placing second.

Sad but true. How can a conservative not SEE that Rudy is not one of us? Neither is Huckabee. It is obvious. Plain as day.

While they might be slightly less destructive to the USA than a democrat prez would be, for the most part, they’re both liberals in Republicans’ clothes.

On top of that they are both small-time local politicians, which no more makes them eligible to be POTUS than Hillary being [token] First Lady and a pretend senator makes her eligible.

Conservatives, don’t be so desperate for a GOP candidate that you give away the store to someone who can do us more harm than good.

FNC’s support of Rudy is sickening and, I fear, will likely sink Fred’s chance of winning the nomination. They are now NO better than CNN.

Given this, I do wish that Rush would come out in support of Fred a bit stronger. I know he won’t endorse anyone... but why not? He must feel that Rudy can beat Hillary.. or maybe no one can.. so why piss off the other candidates.

I’m totally bummed about Fred’s continued free fall in the polls.

We’re screwed.

Did you see the encouraging poll from Wisconsin?”

Obviously Fred hasn’t campaigned there yet. If he does, watch him go into freefall, just as he does everywhere else that he shows up.

Fred is a terrible, terrible candidate and a major disappointment.

He will play no role whatsoever in the GOP race.

He will drop out after South Carolina.

You are a victim of the RINO propaganda. Polls are pretty much meaningless.

Fred has the support of many of the heavyweight conservatives in the conservative movement — I don’t see why he can’t pull it off.

I have been suspicious about Fox for some time, but gave them the benefit of the doubt for too long.
There are quite a few reasons to turn them off. Content, or lack of, irritating anchors, (or whoever they are). Lately, I have turned them off more than I watch.
So be it.

Yes, I did see that poll. Was slightly encouraged because it was a pleasant surprise. Maybe the national polls will improve Fred’s chances.
I never used to pay that much attention to polls. Still think it depends on who is doing the polling.

I’ve wondered about Fox too. They really seem dismissive of Fred with little apparent reason. It may be that when Fred was rising in the polls it was at Rudy’s expense, so Fox was not all that thrilled. When Huck began to rise it was mostly at Romney’s expense. That seemed to be worth discussing.

That being said, it’s still Fred’s job to get folks to talk about him, and for some reason he hasn’t been able to do that very much. He has great credentials and a good number of good endorsements, but it almost looks like he is coasting to the finish line. I have to wonder when is he going to pick up the pace?

My real concern now is that the GOP seems to be split now between its liberal wing and its conservative wing. The liberal wing is supporting Rudy, and the conservative wing is supporting Huck. Either way we go, it looks like we will get a liberal.
